A crowd of colored boys hunting lost cattle in rising river swamp on the DeVaughn place lost London Green. While wading he grabbed a tree limb as his mule swam ahead and then leaped into rushing water. Despite rescue efforts the boy disappeared and his body was found later wedged near a tree root six feet under water.
Frank Toomer used a Winchester to fatally shoot Jake Roberts at a late night event near Col A W Busbee’s farm. The attack followed a riot scene with prior criminal history noted for the shooter, who had recently moved to Dooly from Houston County.
