JURIST CALLS TO END HANGING IN GEORGIA

Hermit known as Wild John Starnes dies in forest near Gaffney
D C June 18 After forty years as a hermit in local forests Wild John Starnes died Saturday night of pneumonia. He was brought from his solitary home by friends and was a well known figure in the area. It was rumored he was the Confederate soldier who accidentally shot Gen Stonewall Jackson and his memory faded into legend. Starnes allegedly became mentally unbalanced after the war and lived apart from society in a rough forest hovel.

Atlanta June 13. John Withrow the young man executed at Ble Ridge last week for wife murder had a photograph taken while standing on the gallows with the rope around his neck and his cap adjusted. He is the first man in Georgia to have such a picture taken.

Lightning Strike Kills Farmer and Two Daughters in Georgia
Jeff Griffin was instantly killed and his two young daughters badly hurt when a bolt of lightning struck their porch in Amerions Georgia. Charla Yeomans, a neighbor, was fatally injured after lightning hit a nearby area and struck the Griffin home. Griffin was described as a wealthy farmer.

In Savannah on June 14 William Wimberly, a Black man wanted for assault, resisted police and firemen in a dusk to dawn gun battle. He hid in a house on the city outskirts and exchanged heavy gunfire, with at least 800 shots fired. An attempt to drown him out with a fire engine failed.

Cordele Ga June 14 The dry goods firm of J L Hollingsworth in a prominent city block was declared insolvent and closed. The petition was filed by Colonel J Y Bill representing foreign creditors. The firm had conducted extensive business for several years and the failure came as a surprise.

Adel Ga June 18 The Georgia and Florida Company finishes its South Georgia extension entering Adel and connects with the South Georgia and West Coast. A passenger train will run this week, giving Adel three railroads. The Adel Lumber Company tram road may convert to a chartered road and extend toward Colquitt county Thomasville and Pavo.
