Friday gathering called by Chairman J P Heard at the courthouse opposed dividing Dooly County. Representative-elect L W Mobley of Byromville spoke against the split with others from across the county voicing opposition. The meeting was enthusiastic and more gatherings are planned. Ame r icus Ga April 41 Edward Ward Smith a young man well known here died this morning from a gunshot wound received days ago at the hands of a citizen of Moultrie. The shooting followed an alleged attack and Smith collapsed after returning home for surgical aid. The Moultrie suspect was arrested by telegraph at the request of the dead man's relatives.
In Macon on April 16 a mob incident ended with Jim Napper, a Black man, wounded Tim Barlow, a white farmer, during a baptism dispute over plowed leased ground. Napper fled to swamps and was captured after about 9 hours with roughly 150 men surrounding him. Sheriff Robertson intervened to keep the peace.
Evergreen Alabama April 16 Hardy Watkins a negro was indicted here today for the murder of his wife by throwing her on a burning brush heap and holding her there until life was nearly extinct She died moments later and in her dying declaration accused her husband of the crime
The Crodele residence of W. T. Cheeves burned early Monday morning. The building, valued at 1200 dollars, carried 650 dollars in insurance. About half the furniture was saved, and the cause of the fire is not known.
More than twenty counties seek space to display at the Georgia state fair with a likely national look. The government building at Piedmont park could host large agricultural exhibits, with space exceeding usual state fairs. W M Carters saw mill six miles east of Douglas along the A B railroad was destroyed by fire at 10 o clock yesterday. Loss about 1500 with no insurance. Mr OA was in Douglas at the time and had not worked since Thursday. origin of the fire remains unexplained.
Representatives of machinists engineers and conductors of the Central railway left Savannah for Atlanta to appear before the railroad commission tomorrow to oppose the measure requiring railroad passenger fares to be cut to two cents a mile. Attorney Robert L. Colding accompanies them as they argue against the proposed rate reduction.
