The Vidalia Baptist congregation aims to hold its first service in the new $60,000 church on Sunday April 2 if pews arrive in time. The basement Sunday school room and third floor classrooms are being finished, with the main auditorium to follow over the year as seats and fittings are installed.
The Department of Agriculture will use 24 000 rural carriers with 9 500 post offices to collect pig population data across fourteen leading swine states from May. Carriers will hand out questionnaires to farmers to record births January 1 to June 30 and state totals will be derived from farm counts.
D C Harris the dry goods merchant announces a formal store opening for Saturday March 25. The remodeled store showcases an entire new stock of merchandise including shoes ready to wear and clothing. Harris will operate on a strict cash basis to offer better values and closer prices. Also notes S R Shuman’s improvement after a serious illness.
Willie Phillips was found guilty of voluntary manslaughter for the murder of Otis Holmes and sentenced to 8 to 12 years. The trial featured defense by Lankford & Rogers and C. W. Sparks, with Solicitor Gray and Judge I. H. Corbitt prosecuting. Moore proceedings indicated possible new-trial motion and other related cases, including Foster Williamson and brothers John D. Phillips and Colon Phillips, to be tried this week as the court aims to clear the docket before adjournment.
A one hour sale by Modern Farm Implement & Hardware Co. offered aluminum ware at three prices one cent forty nine cents and ninety nine cents. A large crowd assembled before the doors opened and most of the stock was sold out within the hour. The Advance advertised the sale for Wednesday at 10 oclock. Dublin meeting outlines a district budget of 5000 for a full time scout executive to boost troop formation. Toombs County quota set at 500 with efforts to raise funds this year. Vidalia and Cochran host Troops. district aims for 30 to 40 troops within a year. Kiwanis to visit Vidalia Public School March 31. Ladies Night moved to March 27 with supper at 8.
The junior division met at Lucy Poe's home for a program including Etude Lucy Poe Merry Mood Egyptian Dance and Bach Invention No 2 Then they planned an overalogue and a debate and invited visitors Mrs Anderson Tohnnie Gay Mrs Poe Mrs Bland Cathryn White andFgbert Anderson to attend ice cream and cake followed the meeting.
Saturday afternoon at Page's Drug Store the ladies of the Methodist church will conduct a miscellaneous market. Housewives are invited to visit before Sunday dinner. Items on sale include dressed hens cakes candies salads sandwiches and more.
Louie and Chester Poole, sons of O M Poole who runs Towns Bluff Ferry near Uvalda, woke Sunday morning to a yellow Altamaha flood surrounding their hut. The water rose rapidly overnight, washing shoes around inside the room, making crossing by ferry impossible for ten days due to the high river stage.
A Seaboard wreck above Cor dele delayed the east bound train about four hours. Local girl scouts awaiting a return train at Higgston were rescued after a telephone message to Vidalia. Additional Saturday wrecks occurred in local yards and another derailment in the G. F. yard near McIntosh street.
Mrs. N. W. Swindell was hostess to the Round Dozen Club last Saturday afternoon. The meeting, postponed from earlier in the week, featured bridal wreath and spring blossoms as decor. After the game, a salad course with iced tea was served to members and guests.
A Boy Scout Rally will be held at Vidalia city hall next Wednesday evening at 8 o clock to explain plans for securing a full time Scout executive for the Twelfth Congressional District. W J DeLoach is county chairman for Toombs in the effort. The district now has three troops and organizers hope one executive can raise the number to thirty or forty troops within a year.
