Grand Jury Recommends Reductions Across County Salaries

After a five day session the grand jury returned over sixty true bills and urged sweeping salary cuts for all county officers except F F Goddard who is raised from $50 to $150 monthly for his duties as auditor purchasing agent and clerk of the board. It also calls for collection of a $2000 sheriff tax funds shortage and notes W B Herring of Vidalia named notary public of the fifty first district.

New Plumbing Firm To Open On Church Street

Mr. J. B. Douglas of Swainsboro rents the former Standard Grocery building on Church Street and will open a plumbing establishment at the start of the month. He is an experienced plumber and will carry a full line of plumbing supplies.

Board Sets Monthly Meetings On Second Monday

County commissioners of Toombs move their regular meeting to the second Monday of each month effective September The salary of the clerk remains discretionary by the board replacing the $50 per month fixed rate Mrs Trixie Calhoun and her daughter Ernestine return to Lake City Pennsylvania after visiting the McColskey family.

Galbreath Not Guilty in High Profile Murder Trial

Tom Galbreath, indicted for the murder of Cicero Mathews, was found not guilty by the jury after a hard fought trial in Superior Court. The verdict was delivered Friday noon. Three defendants faced separate trials, with Tippett and Booth to be tried this week and a mistrial called in the arson case of Foster and Williamson. Alberta McLeod was convicted of murder and sentenced to twenty years, while Wall Ruffin was acquitted. Jasper Tillman was found guilty of burglary with a recommended lesser penalty. The State versus J. R. and W. H. Clements continued into next proceedings.

Mr. M. L. McLemore last week sold his interest in the South Georgia Produce Co. to associates W. Cockfield and T. W. Timmerman. He helped organize the company, which has seen strong early success, and will focus on his farming interests.

Warren Talks of the Tobacco Crop

J A Warren manager of the Vidalia warehouse tells Kiwanis members that fine tobacco can be grown locally. He notes successful regions use tobacco demonstrators to guide planting cultivation and marketing. Small farmers with 400 acres benefited financially when aided. Brant's plan with 150 to 200 acres under a demonstrator may boost profits here.

Car owner injured when cranking in gear crashes into tree

T. C. Thompson was called to assist Mr. Barnhill who was badly injured when he cranked his car in gear. The car surged forward, pinning him against a tree and severely injuring his right side. His condition was reported as critical.

Mosley Bracken Engagement Announced for Lyons Couple

Mr. and Mrs. A. S. Mosley of Lyons announce the engagement of their daughter Manila to Mr. James W. Bracken of Vidalia formerly of Macon. The couple plan a September wedding.

Mr and Mrs Joseph Henry Carter of Omaha announce the engagement of their daughter Mildred to Mr Arthur Lee Page of Lyons. The wedding is set for September 21 at the Omaha Methodist Church.

Timmerman hosts Round Dozen Club afte rnoon games

Mrs J C Timmerman entertained the Round Dozen Club on Saturday afternoon with Boston Rock. A light course was served and Mrs Joe Jackson along with Misses Katherine and Frances Godbee helped serve. Miss Anna Brazell made the high score. Out of town guests included Mrs Gertman of Denver and Mrs Johnson of Hazlehurst.

Clements Indicted in Murder Trial Over Fertilizer Dispute

W. H. Clements, indicted for the murder of Joe Bell after a quarrel over fertilizer, was taken up Tuesday and sent to the jury late Tuesday night. By noon Wednesday no verdict had been reached.

Tobacco Yields To King Cotton North Carolina

Vidalia tobacco market closes for 1921 season as farmers pivot to cotton. Buyers and officials depart tonight for North Carolina, with warehouse managers Warren and Ponarea completing a third year and potentially returning next season.
