The Vernon Chamber of Commerce and local merchants plan a fashion show at the Fair Grounds next Wednesday at 8:30 p.m. An overhead platform will lift 40 living models showcasing latest styles for women and men, with a musical program and readings. Plans and detailed program to be announced soon.
Drilling resumed on the South Vernon Oil Company Well No. 1 after a prior rig fire caused by gas ignition. A new rig has been erected and tools were recovered without trouble, with drilling continuing after the restart yesterday. The well has passed two sands and deepening operations proceed on the lease.
Several boys and girls from Wilbarger county rural districts wish to attend Vernon schools and offer to work in exchange for room and board. Interested hosts are asked to contact the Chamber of Commerce by phone.
VV R Glazener of Oklainian announces that all ex students of A & M College are invited to attend a meeting at the Elks club rooms tonight at 10 oclock for the purpose of organizing an alumni group. All ex students are expected to be present.
Wilbarger county farmer T K Burchfield returned from a Plains country trip. He bought a half section of land in Palmer County nine miles southeast of Farwell on the Lire highway and plans to move after next year’s crop. He reports good crop conditions across the Plains.
The T H Shive residence on West Paradise Street has been sold to H E Pigg a noted local oil man. Ashenhurst who managed the Vernon mill will resign and Kent Barber of Fort Worth will assume his duties. Shive plans winter in California with his family and may move to Oklahoma later.
L B Piper cashier of the Waggoner National Bank reports Los Angeles is growing faster than ever with the city watch estimating near 1 000 000 inhabitants and expects rapid expansion in apartments homes and business districts. Mr and Mrs Piper and their daughter Dorothy visited from Vernon and returned home Sunday night.
Senator Tom W. Perkins of McKinney, a renowned Texas newspaper man, stopped in Vernon Friday night at the home of his brother in law S. L. Mallow during a return trip from the Plains country. He was accompanied by Frank G. Dowell, manager of the McKinney Realty Company.
The Red Fork Baptist Association closed its session with officer elections. George Burlee as moderator C Mer Spadden as secretary T Watkins as treasurer and BE Lankerster as corresponding secretary were chosen. Rev. C V Carroll was unanimously reelected associational missionary.
Louis Franklin and Tom Lee left Saturday for Amarillo to join an orchestra. Mose Vernon and others were accepted from a long applicant list and appeared on Community Week’s program performing in a play and playing fiddle for the old square dance.
Cayce Brothers have repurchased the blacksmith shop on West Texas Street they sold last December to Starnes and Markham. They will take charge immediately.
The Wilbarger County fair prepares for a record event with expanded community exhibits from Elliett Harrold Lockett Barge and Parmners Valley as well as new displays. County agents Poop Chaney and Miss Brida Goodfellow coordinately showcase farm products and women’s clubs while premier racing cards and shows promise the best fair yet in Vernon.
The Vernon Concert Band enters the Childress fair band contest next Thursday under the direction of Robert S. Reed. The full group will travel to Childress Thursday morning, with the announcement urging motorists to attend and speak with band members at the fair.
Robert T. Lutz son of Mr and Mrs J B Lutz tests Saturday for Brownwood where he will enter Isleward Payne College taking a regular course of study He is an honor graduate of Kemper Military College in Missouri and a member of the local Texas National Guard He will join the Old Gray Mare band in Brownwood and accompany them to San Francisco for the American Legion convention.
Mayor Carry Mason announces a city commission meeting at the courthouse this evening to discuss the proposed electric light ordinance. The ordinance was brought before the commission after a petition with 700 signatures asking for its passage and a possible referendum if rejected. Mason urges all citizens to attend as all aspects of the city's business will be examined.
The Tair Association arranged with Southwestern Decorating Company of Dallas to decorate major highways into Vernon. A company representative will visit merchants to seek support for decorating business houses ahead of the fair, with merchant backing welcomed.
The Crowell Public Schools opened last Monday with 427 pupils in the first term. Enrollment is expected to rise in the coming weeks and again during the holiday season. Carey Alger and Jesse Lothi now own a tailor shop on Kan: Pease Street leased from Arles Hawkins and Weverett Ahimes.
A jury was obtained from a 725 strong venire at 10 oclock to hear WH Sneed charged with the murder of J T Dansor. The murder weapon was a water jug. The trial began and attorneys expect to finish late today or tomorrow with District Attorney John Storey leading the prosecution.
The funeral of R Proby Parker 32 who was found dead in his car this week was Sunday afternoon at the First Baptist Church Si oelock with pastor J Mims in charge assisted by Rev W A P Rense. Interment was in East View. Many friends and relatives attended and there were many floral offerings. Active pallbearers were H W Walker L A Foster Forrest Nowlin W O Stokes W Bailey and Smith Mathlow.
The Oklaunion Parent-Teachers Association will meet in the school room Thursday at 4 PM. All parents are urged to attend as the year’s work will be discussed and plans for a community booth at the fair will be made.
Dr. Dudley Miller left for Texarkana Arkansas after visiting relatives. He entered a Houston dental college from Vernon four years ago and will pursue special work in Chicago this winter.
B Townsend formerly of Vernon now in Fort Worth is reported as slightly improved after a period of critical illness from a nervous breakdown. Doctors hold out hope for a complete recovery.
Marriage licenses were issued this week to Joe Hamilton and Miss Lona Corley.
Vernon Public Schools reports a 20 percent rise in high school enrollment with 62 students on opening day, while seating for 516 was insufficient. Administrators expanded study halls, relocated rooms, and expect further increases as cotton-field workers arrive. Overall district enrollment totals were 1,000 with several schools at capacity. The new high school building is planned to ease crowding, contracts pending. Athletics are forming as the football squad enters practice and aims for a strong season.
Ho A. Thompson, a famed special agent with Vrisco fines in Ba pupa Oklahoma, visits the city for court. Thompson, once chief special agent of the FBI overseeing several states and border duties during Mexican revolutions, later led San Antonio Police Department’s identification bureau and previously served as U.S. marshal in Oklahoma.
Crowell's trades day held last week drew hundreds to town with merchants offering special sales. The event included some nonessential attractions but overall provided a festive day for attendees and a strong showing for local merchants.
Mr and Mrs Harper Reed and Mr and Mrs RLS McConihe and daughter Lily returned last week from a stay with Mrs Bulaile Ish and Mrs Uriel Reed in Helens Montana. The Reeds had been there for several months with their children and Mrs McConihe spent the summer there while Mr McConihe joined his family last month.
Mr and Mrs L B Piper and daughter Dorothy returned Sunday from Los Angeles California where they spent three months visiting relatives and sightseeing Mrs Piper and Dorothy traveled together while Mr Viper joined the family last month
Mrs. A. N. Vernon and her son Fred have returned from visiting relatives in San Antonio and Los Angeles.
