New York introduces rolling stores to cut consumer costs with low overhead and fixed profit margins. Veterans are used as salesmen where possible, and stores claim reduced food prices despite lacking traditional shop features.
Wilbarger county launches a Red Cross membership drive from Sunday to Armistice Day aiming to enroll 3,300 members. Ex soldiers are urged to speak in churches and visit the chapter office to promote the national drive and fund no new money, only enrollment fees. County chairmen and quotas listed by district, with county chapter leader TP Shive guiding the effort.
The National Farm Loan Bank of Houston leads a campaign to persuade 1500 tenant farmers to become landowners before Christmas. Secretary S. A. Lindsey plans to visit Vernon to organize a drive, arguing farm ownership benefits amid stable land prices and cotton markets.
F. H. Britton and family relocate from New Mexico to Vernon. He previously worked for the government in Lovington and will enter truck and transfer business here. Britton is brother of A. J. Britton, Vernon Abstract Company manager, and Mrs. Britton is daughter of Mrs. A. C. Craig, formerly of Vernon.
A 15-year-old, Eliff Castleberry, son of W. B. Castleberry, shot and killed a fine black eagle two miles east of Vernon while perched on a bluff. The bird, not an old specimen, had a wingspan a little over seven feet and was displayed in town before likely being mounted by a taxidermist.
Work started yesterday on the foundation for a one story brick building to be erected by S R Crim on his lots on South Cumberland street across from the county jail. Concrete work by A J Liles, brick work overseen by W W Greever, and J A Cartwright as carpenter foreman. Crim owns three buildings immediately north of the new site.
Pinkney Oates son of Mr and Mrs J T Oates arrived Monday with his discharge from the army. He went overseas about a year ago and has been guarding German prisoners since the armistice. He reports that very few American soldiers remain in France. He was discharged at Camp Pike Arkansas.
The Delphian Club will meet Wednesday afternoon November 5th with Mrs. R. B. Gibson on West Texas street. The lesson will be the second set of questions in Delphian Course No. 8. Each member will name and discuss a current event at roll call.
Daniel Bond, Vernon Cotton Company manager, warns against picking cotton while damp fog soot lingers. He notes a 42 cent price may push harvest, but warns lint damage and worthless seed. Gins and air mills closed to allow drying. Bent urges farmers to wait and dry cotton on the stalk.
Five boys aged eleven to fifteen were convicted in Wichita Falls juvenile court for stealing a survey cushions near Tolbert and burgling Midway schoolhouse. They received five years in Gatesville Reform School with no suspended sentence. J J Farrell owned the stolen car. Sheriff W A Ish released the officers to Wichita officers for later action after their trial.
Persistent rains delay paving on East wi burger street as contractor McCollan receives rock stock and machinery arrives. After Mast Wilhaver street completes, crews move to West Lexus and West Paradise and South Main streets. City Commission to hold hearings on November 24 and 25 to consider property owner assessments for pavement costs.
The Culture Club meeting planned for Tuesday in Mrs J G McCarroll’s class on East Our e street was postponed because of inclement weather. Mrs Metacrolc says the meeting will be held next Tuesday if possible.

Graevial and Robert Walter Scott of Vernon were selected for college training under the government program for disabled veterans. Graevial attends Metropolitan Business College in Dallas, while Scott studies at A. and M. College. Both were approved by the Federal Board for Vocational Education in Dallas. Disabled veterans who have not yet applied are urged to contact the Dallas office promptly.
J E Roberts and Miss Ollie May Hindman married by Elder Tom Walker at his South Pannin home on Wednesday. They left for Fort Worth then will return to Chillicothe to set up their home. The groom formerly served at the Denver depot in Oklainton and has been in Chillicothe. The bride is the daughter of Mr and Mrs DD Hind. Friends extend congratulations and best wishes.
Kincheloe district school will begin its 191-20 session next Monday with special exercises. BE Porterfield is principal and will be assisted by Miss Minnie Milner. An intermediate teacher is to be selected later.
Voters in Texas will decide six proposed constitutional amendments next Tuesday. Amends debt authorization for state roads, grants aid to Confederate soldiers and widows, prison system fund division, Galveston bond issuance for Shrine protection, tax limits for public works, and university status. Election officials listed. county clerk urges early pickup of election materials.
Miss Lila Allred chronicles a Dallas Victory Fair trip by Chillicothe Girls Club members. Route 2 winner Alive placed first in an individual exhibit. second prize went to a exhibit, while others toured arts, textiles, livestock, and fish hatchery pavilions. County Commissioner Greene sponsored rail fare for all participants from Wilbarger County, the region sending twelve girls to the event.
Vernon officials and the Chamber of Commerce rally behind forming a city band. Floyd McKnight of the Vernon Record reports strong local support with about twelve homes pledged and more Musicians expected to join. Trombone and clarinet players are in high demand, seeking applicants to organize the group promptly.
Billings departed Wednesday night for Palacios to spend the winter there. He had planned to visit Aransas Pass to manage property, but a recent storm altered those plans.
W T Dykeman district manager along with OTL Piamilton and Mrs FD Lindsay assist in Vernon to recruit new members for the Knights and Ladies of Security now renamed the Security Benefit Association. Amarillo staff report local membership near 150 and note a 10 percent rate increase effective January 1 with a Kansas hospital and home in Topeka aiding six Amarillo children under care.
