Vernon officials use a hard line on speeding and reckless driving with seven arrests in five days. Mayor Harry Mason fines offenders at least ten dollars and vows continued enforcement to curb stop-and-go behavior and near light posts.
Misa Lillian Newton sells a residence and eight acres in West Vernon to S. C. Hawley. Hawley will occupy the property as a home. Deal negotiated by L. A. Hollar Realty Company.
Vernon streets teem with cotton lint drifting in gutters and alleys. A merchant weighed littered fleece and found sixty cents, implying a daily three dollar profit for the enterprising picker as buyers sample and drop loads along the route. The discarded cotton creates a windfall for someone ready to seize the chance.
Governor W P Hobby declares November 11 1919 a statewide holiday to observe the first anniversary of the World War armistice. He urges patriotic societies religious groups and local officials to organize commemorations and give thanks for the victory and the bravery of American servicemen and women.
The Kell Milling Company re opens its plant after a shutdown since July end. A break in the engine caused the halt and plans to install turbinery. New machinery not yet received and reinforced engine house not completed. Repairs kept the old engine running and crews were sent to the Wichita Falls plant. Local improvements cost about 5000 dollars.
Hone Premonstrator Miss Ohmie Wilcos will host two poultry demonstrations in Wilbarger County on November 14 invited by FLOW poultry specialist BKasemeier from A & M College. He plans a morning session in Vernon and a second in the country, with local flocks volunteered for practical judging of liver quality and culling importance.
Mont King, a Vernon businessman and pioneer citizen, estimates cotton production in Obkbinen county at about two thirds of a bale per acre. He says this season yields are unusually high and the staple is better than usual, though pickers are proving troublesome for farmers this year.
J N Rayzor of Denton Texas addressed First Baptist Church members on the mission from a business view. He cited a S2500 gift by Jessie Mercer and traced its impact leading to two missionaries, the Baylor University system, Texas Baptist Memorial Sanitarium in Dallas, and the Southwestern Seminary in Fort Worth.
J. A. Calloway deputy collector of internal revenue for this district died Thursday night at his home in Childress from typhoid fever. He is survived by his widow and one child. Calloway had often been in Vernon for the department and made many friends who join in sympathy with the family.
Milford Rouse was elected Sophomore representative to Baylor University’s student legislative body in the election held Thursday. A son of Rev W. T. Rouse, Milford served as business manager of the Lariat last year and has many friends in the city pleased by the honor.
Dr Thomas Funt Dean and Director of UC College of Agriculture argues that funds spent by USDA state colleges and agencies on boys club work produced superior outcomes. He says clubs have shown lasting influence on boys futures and that the investment yields the greatest human results for the money spent.
A regular County Commission meeting occurred in the county judge's office Saturday. Little business was transacted aside from approving several accounts.
Lloyd & Company brokers report a 2000 acre lease sale averaging 20 dollars per acre, totaling 50000 dollars. Purchasers include oil operator representatives from across the county. Strong interest arose from Kemp-Munger lens well south of Town Park, spurring activity countywide.
Fuller Haney left Saturday for his home in Lubbock after a visit with relatives in Vernon. Mir. Pamney recently discharged from the Navy after two years of service, recalling his time in Washington D.C. and noting he did not see a ship during his service.
The county bought a new trader and tractor in Dallas for County Judge J E L McHugh. They arrived and are used on county roads when weather allows. Work progressed Friday and Saturday but paused by rain.
The Wichita Falls chamber of commerce has begun a drive for a million dollar post office project and sent a request to Congressman Lucian W. Parrish for funding. The current facility is deemed inadequate, prompting businessmen to plan a temporary addition to handle postal fees.
Smith Auto Sales reports the sale of Columbia Six cars to Mrs. J. T. Cube BR. S. McConihe and Luther Webb.
Charles Arthur Carney, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Carney, has received notice from Congressman Parrish that he will be appointed to take the entrance examination for admission to the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis Maryland. If he passes, he will receive four years of instruction without cost and a remuneration of $600 per year. Arthur attended Clarendon College last fall and was a local high school student.
State Food and Drug Inspector Mo Portwood reports multiple violations at local meat markets and a restaurant in Vernon. One seller pleaded guilty and paid a minimal fine of Rs25 plus costs. other cases were filed in county court. He warns strict action for all future violations.
Kemp with partners reported the Kemp Miniger Allen well near Town Park, South Wichita Falls, opened dry despite the elf near hole top. A bit was dropped in before removal and oil bailed after several minutes of flow. Drillers expect deeper drilling may yield a productive well.
Wilbarger county farmers holding notes under the Drouth Relief Act are urged to settle with County Treasurer M. Blair. Funds are arriving slowly and the county must forward all money to the State by December 1. Farmers urged to call at the treasurer's office promptly to fulfill obligations.
W A Atchison returned from Kansas City Missouri and Waterloo Town after a several days stay. He reports people in both states have heard much about Wilbarger oil operations and are eager to acquire Wilbarger acreage.
Ed Turner foreman at Waggoner Ranch south of Vernon shot himself in a suspected act of temporary insanity. Coroner T J Griffiths ruled death self-inflicted after inquest. Turner, about 40, left a widow and two children and was described as a well known local foreman with caring for a ill child in the family. The body was shipped to Midrea, with funeral arrangements noted.
Jesse Th Sewell, president of Abilene Christian College, preached at both Sunday services at the Church of Christ before large crowds. The message centered on Christian education with special emphasis on Giving and unselfish living.
Mrs J W Downs of Nashville Tennessee will lecture Sunday night at the First Methodist Church on women's work in the church. She is general educational secretary of the Womens Council of the Southern Methodist Church and a member of the general board of Missions and the Centenary committee. She recently toured the South for War activities and is known as a forceful speaker. She will also address churchwomen Monday afternoon.
