U S Davis of Vernon Texas urges Wilbarger County and nearby communities to meet or exceed quotas for the Salvation Army Home Service Campaign. He notes several towns already over their targets while others lag, and promises a full district report Tuesday listing pledges and donors.
Miss Lora Long elected bread basket for Missionary Ruths. Mrs S B Trevathan wins prize for to Wichita Walls. Delegates chosen for district meeting in Quanah on October 7. Joint mission study with Women’s Missionary Society planned, one meeting monthly at home and one at church. Anna May Pinkston played violin. salad served. Brown hosting October 8 on South Wood Street with Mrs John Brown assisting.
The Wilharger county chapter sets up a Red Cross booth in the main building with Esther Swartwood in charge. The room features American colors and portraits of the U S president and Red Cross head. The planned nursing course is postponed due to lack of a nurse from headquarters.
Vernon farmer Daniel Bond earns rare praise as High Orion Lady 2nd places at the International Swine Show in Des Moines Iowa after being in the breeding pen less than a month. The three year old gilt belongs to the Vernon Duroc Jersey Pair and hails from Edo Kern’s line. Bond notes the win is significant given the hog’s short fitting period and anticipates future success. No word yet on Vernon Lone Star the 500 pound boar entered in the pig class.
Remus Kelly son of Ben Kelly of San Antonio and nephew of Ro 8 Kelly and Mines B I Parker and J D Summerour visited Vernon relatives Saturday. He was discharged from the navy after serving on the battleship Arkansas and has accepted a position with Panhandle Lumber Company in Amarillo. Kelly, a radio operator, traveled widely and recalled being blessed by the Pope in Rome as an impressive ceremony given for extraordinary service.
Pendleton returned from Fort Worth where six Victor artists performed a musical program. The act featured Van Epsbanjo Billy Murray Henry Burr Frank Croxton Monroe Silver Albert Campbell Fred Banta J. T. Meyers The Sterling Trio and Pee less quartet. The Victor program drew one of the largest crowds ever seen for a similar event with additional dates in Dallas.
J. J. Williams, father of Mrs. C. P. Ross and Sam Williams, died at his home in Tuttle Oklahoma Saturday night after a short illness. Funeral services were held in Tuttle Monday afternoon. Mrs. Ross and Mr. Williams were summoned to his bedside but he died before they arrived. The community expresses sympathy to the bereaved family.
Cotton brings about 260 dollars per bale with price per pound framed near fifty cents. Farmers weigh heavy bales about a half ton each and seed is quoted at fifty dollars a ton. The highest price yesterday reached 302 dollars. The staple opens quickly in the warm weather and harvest accelerates despite worker shortages. County Weigher T Lo Bryant reports he weighed fifty bales so far today.
Beginning Sunday the Baptists at Wilbarger will organize for a one million dollar campaign. Meetings at Tolbert and White City churches will plan county wide organization extending to small churches under Rev. W. Rouse and Geo. G. Miso. The drive aims to extend countywide contact and finalize leadership structure.
Pitts completed a modern barn on its Vernon area farm several miles west of Vernon. The structure measures thirty by forty six feet with concrete granaries and several other modern conveniences installed.
The Robinson Motor Company delivered Buick touring cars to Endee Wilson and D B Morris. Smith Auto Sales Company reports the sale of a Scripps Booth car to Mi Metnivid of Electra.
Ed Theban resigns from his post as courthouse janitor effective October 1. No successor named yet, leaving the position vacant.
A remodeling project to relocate and upgrade the tax collector and assessor offices is advancing. The northwest room will become a vestibule for payments and business, improving privacy, with access via a stair from the main area and relocation of offices to the second story.
Police traced a vehicle stolen from Wylie on Sunday to a rural area near Electra Tuesday afternoon. The car, heading toward Vernon, was being returned to its owner when officers intercepted it. The theft involved several suspects who reportedly wore disguises, and the machine was said to have been taken from First Methodist Church area on West Pease Street during church services.
Kansas City attorney Menner of Kansas City Minnesota Vernon man discusses plans to move a large opera project to Wilberger and to arrange spring meetings with brothers Rea and Roland. He is a well known corporate lawyer connected with insurance and liability firms and has advised large land operators in forty three states. He travels to Vernon to examine oil prospects in Sonio.
Pix of Wichita Mathes visited town this week to oversee oil leases northwest of Worton. Hix just returned from Fort Scott Arkansas after closing a breach to drill a 3500 feet deep well on one of his leases. The buyers are well connected in Port Smith Arkansas with ties to a son of a former Arkansas governor. This marks the third well Hix has secured for the company near Tolbert and plans to drill another.
Briggs visiting Dallas News managing editor notes Vernon gains in street paving two miles of concrete or brick and new sidewalks. He praises stores as modern while recalling past streets and weeds, credits local women for aiding street cleaning, and plans to boost publicity for Willargar County fields.
J M Underwood has let the contract to J A Carney for a five room residence to be built immediately in front of The home place in East Vernon. The lease will be more and will cost about 84500.
J F Sloan purchases property on West Wanderer Street in a transaction arranged by Blackfood, Larimore & Oates. Sloan plans to use the house as his residence.
The County Fair features a passenger carrying airplane piloted by Lieutenant J. C. Touchstone with Miss Myrtle Howard as the lone rider so far. A race between plane and automobile drew crowds, while many locals signed up for afternoon flights. Agricultural displays show high quality but fewer items. Lon Byars cites farmers’ busy schedules as a cause. Garden produce and a Wilbarger county tobacco stalks attract attention. a jar of almonds from Wilbarger is noted. Livestock quality is uneven. hogs and cattle show promise though exhibitions remain incomplete. Free State Fair trips awarded to several girls in poultry and earning clubs. boys win trips in pic and agricultural groups. Horse and track events draw crowds, with several harness and dirt track races listed and times noted for early days.
Elder Tom Walker of the Church of Christ will preach at the Red Bluff school house Sunday afternoon at 4 o clock. All are invited.
About 300 chickens and other birds compete across standard breeds including Butt Orpingtons Rhode Eshoid Reds White Rocks and Buff Orpingtons with numerous first prizes awarded to exhibitors such as Adam Donges Miss Onie Lee Fergensen J e Collins A Perry Jenkins Mrs Mary Hardage and others. The art booth led by Miss Beulah Ladd and Mrs Claud Reed showcased water and oil paintings china and tapestry with multiple winners named. The flower display earned top booth honors for Miss Nellie Pettit as decoration highlighted by palms roses geraniums and ferns throughout the pavilion.
