County Agent N. R. Tisdal and A Hollinger report army worms menace eastern county wheat. They urge farmers to dig furrows around infected areas with steep sides, add periodic holes, and apply poison only if needed. Early inspection and prompt action can prevent widespread damage.
County Agent N R Tisdal says Walton Peteet Texas director for the United States Bureau of Markets will visit Vernon soon to arrange a cotton classer position. The appointee is expected to begin duties around July 1 after several applications.
Vernon’s four banks show deposits totaling 1,580,973.47 up from 1,851,852.42 on March 14, a rise of 229,121.05. Loans rise by 25,450.99 from 1,510,564.72 to 1,554,024.71. The gain mirrors oil lease sales and local estate transfers as wheat profits near July 1.
Mrs. T A King of this city rushed to Austin Friday to her sister Miss Rose Stuart of Lamesa Texas who fell suddenly ill with acute appendicitis. Miss Stuart died Friday night before her sister arrived. The body was taken to Lamesa for burial Tuesday. Dr T A King went to Lamesa for the funeral and is due back with his wife this afternoon. Miss Stuart had planned a visit to Vernon after Austin.
T. W. Thomas of Lubbock authorized a $100 draft after seeing an oil stock advertisement in the Vernon Record. He knows Vernon and Waxahachie promoters and trusts the Wilbarger Foard Oil Company. Promoters include J. L. Swartwood W. A. Lane A. P. Peek and J. B Coleman B R Coleman E F W Rive.
Vernon promoters led by Charles B. Warren Jr plan Burk-Cameron OO Company near Burk Burnett in the Burk-Waggoner region. Capitalized at 75000 with 600 acres holdings west of Burk-Waggoner. stock issued yesterday and largely subscribed. sales expected in days ahead.
The body of G. M. Purvis, who died in Pasadena California on April 19, arrived in Vernon at 11 o clock this morning. Burial is set for 4 PM at Tolbert cemetery with services by Dr. Henry F. Brooks of the First Methodist Church. Rema ins depart Youngblood undertaking at 3 PM. The widow and several relatives from Wellington and Vernon attend. Purvis was 83.
Alien Glass of Riverside California arrived Tuesday to visit Vernon friends and conduct business. A former Vernon resident he has been promoted to district managership of the Pacific Telephone and Telegraph Company.
Clyde Young expected home soon after sailing from France. Lieutenant Young with aviation service of the Army of Occupation was stationed near Coblenz and is due to arrive in Vernon any day. Sergeant Clifford Young reports a May 28 sail for America.
Jo H Trout declares wheat in Wilbarger county the best he has seen. Mr and Mrs Trout and their two children returned Wednesday night from Olney in their automobile. Mr Trout had been to Bonham and met his wife in Olney to visit her parents.
The Fargo school will close on June 2 with class day exercises. Commencement sermon to be preached at the Methodist Church in Fargo. Music program by Mrs Lovelace pupils next Wednesday. Primary and grammar grades will present a miscellaneous program Thursday. The class play “And Home Came Ted” features Skeet Kelley and others, set at the Rip Van Winkie Inn in the Catskills, with acts listed. Graduates include Monette Brooks Marie Mare and Charlie Mason.
Messrs Lytle and Schoup of Tulsa Oklahoma completed the purchase of the Wichita Tank and Lumber Company from Y Tierring of Amarillo and W W Bennett and R W Coffee of Vernon. Bennett traveled to Wichita Falls to close the deal. The company, begun in February, built tanks for oil fields and operated a large timber trade. Coffee plans to return to Vernon with uncertain future plans.
Mrs. E H Liles two miles north of Vernon tends about 300 young chickens aged four to eight weeks. The flock sits in incubators and she reports splendid luck despite unfavorable weather conditions.
C M Ladd, local Delco Light dealer, returned home from Port Worth after attending a Delco Light convention and sales school. He noted focus on electricity use in country homes for fans heating irons lighting and fire protection, plus features of the Delco Light pump and water system recently released.
Ray S. Carney named special agent for the United States Employment Service covering Wilbar ger county. Discharged veterans urged to seek work through the Record office with Mr. Carney. Agencies ask employers to cooperate by listing needs for labor and skilled workers to aid farmers seeking harvest hands.
VE Phillips of Wheeler county visited here on business this week. He formerly lived in Wilbarger county at the Dr H H Rhoads farm near Chillicothe for two years before moving to Wheeler. He notes very little wheat is grown in his area with most land devoted to corn and feed crops.
Vernon First Methodist Church reports pledges to the Centenary Missionary Fund exceeding 825,000 with Northwest Vernon nearly at its quota. Districts Southwest and Rural Vernon show strong support as leaders credit careful planning and broad church backing in achieving over the top results for the drive.
Reports from daily papers indicate an early arrival of the Thirty Sixth Division from overseas. The 14th Infantry has sailed from Brest on the steamship Finland. The 42nd Infantry is reported to have embarked for America. Company TL in this regiment is composed of volunteers from Vernon and Crowell. The 144th Infantry, with a National Guard company, is expected to depart this week.
Maurice Trout and Raymond Sor Key bike to Mineral Wells expecting a leisurely two to three week trip. They plan easy stages and hope for good weather unless rain interrupts travel.
Contractor O A Swinborn reports excavation for the bridge across Plum creek on the Vernon Oklahoma highway is complete and concrete poured for one wall. With favorable weather the bridge could be finished within the next two months according to Swinborn.
The Neal-Hamilton Oil Company began preparations for a test-well drill on the Charlie Neal ranch, four miles northwest of Deans. Dwellers from Wichita Falls—Moss L. Greene, W. Al Anchor, D. HL Melton, and L. P. Crenshaw—promote the Burk-Waggoner enterprise and have contracted to drill with newly purchased standard cable tools.
J W Mote of Collinsville reports that almost all cotton in Grayson County and nearby regions will need replanting after washouts. He fears planting delays raise boll weevil risk and notes a strong wheat crop five miles northwest of Vernon. Little grain has been sown in Grayson County this year.
M. Haney visited Crowell to promote the Vernon Oil Development Company and Wilbarger county oil projects. He said Crowell and Foard county residents back development as it brings operations closer and many local citizens are cooperating in oil ventures.
G. D. McAnnally of Wichita Falls travels to Vernon for a three day stock sale of Horseshoe Western Company. The firm owns 70 acres near the Gold Leaf well and McAnnally reports strong investor interest since the issue went on the market.
Contractor F A Sable says materials are on site and work on the Bourland Consolidated District school will start immediately. The structure will cost about $11,000 and be modern throughout, located on B R Lewis's farm four miles east of Vernon.
Mrs. Lucile Elliott Weggoner formerly of Vernon is doing war work in New York. She and her mother Nina Mills KilMott represent Texas in the Hall of Star.
