Sheriff Captures Alleged Burglar in Record Time

Less than 30 minutes after guests at the Bailey hotel reported a robbery, Sheriff Frank Edmondson arrested a man who named Albert Fore of Tulsa Oklahoma. Fore and valuables were seized after he was found loitering and matched a description, with gold watch a diamond stick pin and money tied to the crime. He also allegedly entered a downtown lodging house and Bailey Hotel rooms taking cash and valuables.

Mrs. Lon Winn Miss Rebecca Crow and T B Crow are in Scottsville Kentucky to visit relatives. The Crow Sisters recently sold their business here which had operated fourteen years under the firm name Crow Sisters. They plan to be away about six weeks.

Vernon joins in effort to secure Denver road shops

Vernon plans to compete with Childress for the Denver road shops now located there. The Vernon Chamber of Commerce will propose a site and send a business delegation to meet Fort Worth and Denver officials. Vernon argues it is midway between Fort Worth and Amarillo and could boost population and narrows, facing competition from Wichita Falls and Quanah.

Dr Smith to Lecture for Federated Club Lyceum

Dr CT Smith of Vernon will lecture Thursday evening May 31 at 4 15 o clock on British Life and Character at Central Christian church. He has spent time in England and will sketch lives of Queen Victoria Gladstone and other Victorian figures. Tickets sold at Pendleton s Music store and by Federated clubs women. Admission 25 cents children 50 cents adults. Proceeds fund preliminary expenses for next winter s lyceum program and sinking fund.

Dick Bowers to Fight in Altus Early Date

Dick Bowers a local lightweight who has won many battles will travel to Altus on the night of May 30 to face Russell Jackson of Fort Sill junior lightweight champion of the Southwest. Bowers trains hard preparing for what is billed as the toughest match of his career.

Amarillo boosters adjust three day itinerary in June

The Amarillo boosters will delay their planned three day trip until June 25 due to conflicts with the State Yeap Shooter’s meeting in Amarillo June 18 19 20 and the Panhandle Bankers association convention in Plainview June 19 20. They depart Amarillo June 25 by speed train to Elk City arriving 5 20 pm and continue via Hovellock Wichita Falls Vernon and back to Amarillo June 27, with entertainment planned during their visit.

Princess and party leave Sunday for San Angelo

Misses Bula Goodfellow and Bobbie Castleberry depart Sunday for San Angelo. Goodfellow will represent Vernon as Princess of Vernon at the West Texas Chamber of Commerce convention. Vernon Boy Scouts prepare a special summer program to be held May 25 at the First Methodist church. Scoutmaster G. I. Taylor and senior patrol leaders Keith Pigg and Lawrence Keltz urge every interested boy to attend. Bourland community will stage two free open air performances this week. On Wednesday night a children's operetta titled Under the Sugar Plum Tree based on Riley and Field will be presented with a May pole dance as a feature. Thursday night the eighth grade will present Vera's Vacation. No admission will be charged.

Wind Strikes Rayland Vicinity Farm Structures

Friday night winds caused significant damage in the Rayland vicinity with barns and outhouses wrecked or toppled from foundations. Vernon felt a gale lasting some time but reports show no major damage beyond several sign boards blown down.

Directors to discuss plans for Wilbarger County Fair hall

A meeting called by President Lon Byars on Friday will review plans for a permanent main exhibition hall at the fairgrounds to house both exhibition space and an auditorium. The $10,000 brick structure, to be built on Wilburger Street, will fund the site sale and pave the way for future expansion with larger livestock and added attractions planned for the fall fair. President Byars and Manager Dick Coffee are pushing for the finest fair Wilbarger County has seen, with Wortham Brothers set to bring a bigger show than last year.

Vernon Delegation Attends West Texas Chamber Meet in San Angelo

Vernon boosters join more than 50 West Texas towns at the San Angelo chamber of commerce convention. Miss Kula Goodfellow represents Vernon at the queen’s court while delegates travel by special train from Denver to San Angelo. The largest crowd in the industry's history attends, with Vernon banners and color banners carried. Delegates return home Thursday.

Vernon People Make Good Well in Moran Shallow District

Vernon men last week spudded in a well ten miles south of Moran in the shallow oil district. Keltz and others finished at 420 feet yielding 20 barrels. Storm strikes Rayland and Archer County causing damage

Severe weather last Friday toppled barns and outhouses at Rayland, with many structures blown off foundations. A heavy rain and light hail fell across the county, damaging crops little. The same storm hit Archer County, causing heavy damage and injuring several people.

Vernon High School baseball season ends with outlook hopeful

Captain Vivian Smith writes on the Vernon team ending its season and previewing next year. Nine lettermen return including Robinson Walker Bourland Williama Mollar Hmmmock Karnes Bowman and Smith. Walker and Bonurland advanced as freshmen with strong base running and steady heads. Bourland is a lefty with curves. Murchison and Buchinan also contributed. Lenin set season records.
