supporters of Oscar W. Underwood of Alabama rally to back his presidential bid as Vernon County precincts East and West endorse Underwood and pledge instructed delegations to the county convention. McAdoo forces show little strength. some towns send uninstructed delegations while others vote to endorse Underwood.

Modern Woodmen Defeat Magnolia Team 4 Sunday

The Modern Woodmen defeated Magnolia Petroleum 4 to 0 at Pair Park Sunday afternoon. Vernon’s Earl Key pitched six strikeouts for the locals, with Summers and Henderson each fanning one for Magnolia. Todd Chaffin and Carney led Vernon at the plate, while Atkinson and Cushion produced for Magnolia. Vernon led 4-0 after two innings. Mascollin’s club scored once in the third and three times in the sixth to close out the game.

Test Starts on Davis Farm Near Vernon Field

A new oil test begins on the Davis farm one mile south of Vernon. Daniels, Pigg and Murchison head the company. The test will drill up to 3000 feet using standard tools as soon as the rig and remaining material arrive. If oil is found, the Vernon South Field could open to significant operations.

Benefit Circus Under Auspices Of Vernon Band Opens

The Vernon Concert Bank hosts a benefit circus to raise funds for the Brownwood convention of the West Texas Chamber of Commerce. A seven-act program features trapeze, contortion, bicycle and acrobatic acts with nightly concerts by the band. Admission is urged to cover expenses and support the band at the convention.

Modern Home To Be Opened For Public Sunday Vernon project

The Vernon modern home will be ready for occupancy on opening day Sunday May 11. Furniture will be in place and rubbish cleared. Mrs Eugene Wweltz, general chair, will announce committees for next week and the daily Better Homes Week program while in Lubbock for federation meetings.

The Mann Bakery reopened Saturday after a two week closure for extensive remodeling. Work included a new concrete floor, enlarged rear floor space, a metal ceiling, and a complete interior repaint.

Knight New Members Added To Church Sunday

An overflowing crowd witnessed eight new members join the Church of Christ Sunday morning four by faith and four by baptism. Sunday school drew 220 attendees and plans were announced for a special service next Sunday afternoon at Box School house southeast ofallt. The regular service will be held at the church Sunday morning.

Wilbarger County Singing Convention Set for Odell Weekend

The Wilbarger County Singing Convention will meet Saturday and Sunday at Odell for its annual gathering. Archer will preside Saturday night as business is discussed, followed by an all day singing and groundside dinner Sunday. Members are asked to bring well filled baskets as a large crowd is expected. Last year’s event filled a large tabernacle at Jackson Springs.

New Timetable on Fort Worth Denver May 15

Radical changes in the time card of passenger trains over the Fort Worth and Denver effective May 1 with new fast trains between Fort Worth and Colorado. Train No. 3 will reach Vernon at 5:21 p.m. and Train No. 1 the Colorado Special will be there at 3:07 p.m. Train No. 2 from Colorado arrives Vernon at 12:55 p.m. Train No. 4, made up at Childress, arrives in Vernon at 1 a.m. The timetable improves Vernon service with an early morning Fort Worth to Vernon run for day trips to Wichita Falls. The Northbound local to Fort Worth passes Vernon an hour thirty minutes later than now. Trains 1 and 2 will be fast through trains with dining cars and all-steel equipment.

The recently organized Baptist church at Lockett is under construction on brick and concrete. Foundation laid last week near the Lockett store and gin. The 46 foot building will have a basement 30 feet deep for Sunday school rooms. Seating will be provided. plans call for occupancy around duty Ist. Rev. Frank McNair serves as pastor.

Roosevelt Smith Shot Through Hand and Leg

Roosevelt Smith a one year old Negro boy was shot this morning through the right hand and right leg. He was taken to a focal sanitary for treatment. Hi Mathews another Negro is alleged to have fired the shot after a quarrel over a chair at a house near the next school in North Vernon.

Attendance at Vernon Sunday schools fell this Sunday by 113 from last week while offerings rose by 1.75 dollars. Reads show 180 at First Methodist with unknown collection, 17.20 at First Baptist 417 attendees, Federated Presbyterian 8 with 1.81, Central Christian 142 with 10.50, Church of Christ 299 with 7.50, Lutheran 3 with 3.25, totaling 1295 present and a monthly April total of 5200 with 200.70 collected.

The county court convened yesterday morning with Judge T. Warlick presiding. The week started quietly as defaulted judgment cases were tried this morning and juries have not yet been called for the week.

Trade Boosters Here Tomorrow in Vernon Visit

About 125 Dallas Chamber of Commerce representatives travel by special train for a Southwest trade trip. They arrive Vernon at 2 55 PM and depart at 8 55 PM with stops planned to Fort Worth Denver and Wielh te Falls. The group will parade no town, share a welcome address, and mingle with local business people. Children are invited downtown during the visit. Souvenirs and advertising matter will be distributed.

Brownwood Trip in Cars Plan for West Texas Convention

Delegates to the West Texas Chamber of Commerce convention will travel by automobile. Vernon will arrive Monday morning, depart Monday night, with trucks carrying luggage Saturday. A car outing to Hot Wells park two miles south of town is planned, with about 40 citizens already reserving. A $10 round trip charge applies per member to cover expenses. The Vernon Concert group will join and perform on the road.

Hillsboro Man Elected To Head Vernon Schools

Hillsboro educator Lofland, with 18 years at Hillsboro schools, was elected Vernon superintendent at a salary of 8300. The Vernon School Board met quietly to confirm the appointment. Lofland, respected for building a junior college in Hillsboro, will relocate after final arrangements and discussions with staff.

Twelve Old Maids, a light operetta, delighted Chillicothe audiences Thursday night as the Delphian Club of Vernon presented it. About 200 locals attended, and the Vernon concert band played a cheerful after show program to a receptive crowd.

Odell Class of Five Graduates Receives Sermon

Odell High School graduates five seniors two boys and three girls were honored Sunday at the Federated Presbyterian Church with a farewell sermon by Rev BE L Moore. The sermon titled Unity of Opportunity urged unity and opportunity. Class members named were Shelton Boone Starr Keater Low Kester with Loyd Bell singing and Carl Goetze performing violin. The high school orchestra conducted by Goetze provided music. Diplomas will be presented Friday with a week of class plays and programs to follow.

The Vernon Concert Band received 25 band uniforms on Thursday. The blue serge outfits feature a heavy braid along the trouser seam, coats with dark blue braid on sleeves and gold braid on the collar, and military style caps bearing the Vernon name across the front.

Officers National Guard schools set for Texas cities

Captain Clyde D. Watts left Sunday for Austin to attend an officers school for the Texas National Guard. Infantry and artillery officers will study in Austin while cavalry officers attend in Dallas. More than some officers are present at Austin and Dallas for the sessions.

J C Penney to Open Vernon Store August First

J C Penney signs a ten year lease for the T L Pierce building at Texas and Main streets and plans a August opening. Remodeling includes white porcelain brick front, extended show windows, relocated entrances, new sidewalk, and a renovated interior to the best class condition. Penney operates 475 stores in 33 states with 208 openings this year. Vernon will be the 26th in Texas.

Vernon base ball team works hard for Amarillo games starting Thursday. Players practice daily, with a Saturday workout after a pause due to darkness. Walker returns from Austin and trains in spare hours for the championship bid. If Vernon beats Amarillo they advance to Central Texas or North Texas finals. Local support needed to cover expenses and boost expected large crowds at the Amarillo game.

A contract is closed for drilling a 2.04 foot test with standard tools by Misa Theluoa Walls of Wicebita Falls and 8.A. from Los Angeles. The location is in the east half of the SE quarter of section 9, block 14, IM and T.C. survey, about half a mile northwest of Stephens No. 3. Drilling will begin March 20 on 20 acres with M. L.
