Vernon Sets Community Week From May 28 To June 2

The Wilbarger Federation of Women’s Clubs fixed May 28 to June 2 for Vernon Community Week with events each night. Musicians chair opens, Delphian club helps, Home Economics speaker from College of Industrial Arts, and a play Grandpas' Mistake by the Womans Club. Rural clubs close the week with a similar program. Tickets cost 1 for adults and 50 cents for children. single admission 25 cents and 16 cents last year. Committees were named for assisting, stage, solicitations, seats, grounds, and ticketing. A library meeting planned to finalize plans. cows tested for tuberculosis endorsed with compensation if condemned.

Negro Shot In Fracas At Brown's Eating Place

Oi Millienry, a Black man, lies wounded with a gunshot to the jaw after a confrontation at Brown's Eating Place in the Flats late Sunday. George Norris and Willie Walker argued over a tie pin. a revolver fired, Millienry interposed, and the shot struck him. Walker and Norris were detained on public disturbance and gun discharge charges.

Prescott man visits Vernon to aid typhoid fever son

Charles F. Newth of Prescott Arkansas arrived in Vernon to stay at his son Fred Newth’s bedside. Fred, ill with typhoid fever at home, was for several days reported gravely ill but is now resting well.

Miss Christine Barrett of Vernon Texas appeared on Baylor College winter term honor roll as one of the top ten percent. She is a freshman and has held several student offices including vice president of the Bag by B Y P V. Nearby, C Gentey Cavanaugh earned the first college diploma for women in the Southwest.

Fast Denver Train Cuts Fort Worth Denver Travel Time

The Fort Worth and Denver railroad will launch train No. 1 to Denver and No. 2 returning on May 15. The all steel train with dining and observation cars will run via Vernon toward Denver at 3 05 p.m. and reach Fort Worth at 12 30. It promises a six hour reduction Fort Worth to Denver and a two hour gain Vernon to Fort Worth, claiming the fastest Denver route timetable.

Fourth Grade Play Aids Piano Fund Drive

Fourth grade pupils at Parker school staged a small afternoon play titled The Lost Boy to raise funds for the recently purchased piano. Admission was charged and proceeds were added to the school piano fund.

Miss Dorothy Tull daughter of Dr and Mrs J L Pull won a Gage hat prize in a statewide contest for girls 4 to 14. Over 50 contestants entered. Gage millinery of Chicago donated hats valued at 11 dollars. Mrs Barney Williams mailed 100 booklets to color hats, Miss Kelly Housells won last year.

Pushing at McCaleb Well Near Doans This Week

Fishing started Saturday at Mc Caleb No. 1 near Doans and as soon as more casing is received active operations will be resumed on the well in case the fishing is successful. The boiler which had to be repaired has been completed and the crew is at work on the well shut down for two years.

Vernon City Enjoined From Paying Warrants for Plant

Water supply for Electra assured

Electra officials report two loads of pipe for the new water line have arrived and more are en route. Work crews are trenching from the Red River to the municipal lake while another team lays pipe to enable immediate transfer of water to the reservoir within about two weeks. A recent rain raised the city lake level by about 16 inches and daytime water cuts have ended, but residents are urged to conserve water and obey domestic use rules until the new line is connected.

The suit of 1 FL Montgomery vs the City of Vernon and the City Commission was filed in Federal Court at Wichita Falls. The motion to dismiss was overruled by Judge William Atwell last Saturday. The case proceeds toward a final determination in the local court. Plaintiff Mrs Charlotte Montgomery, widow, is named as plaintiff in the petition filed there. The $100,000 bonds for a municipal electric light plant are challenged as void for charter noncompliance in passing the election order.
