Vernon Sees $300000 Worth Of Buildings Under Construction

Vernon is undergoing substantial growth with about 300000 in improvements now under way. Projects include a water plant reserve water hike, 75000 from the city, 100000 by Vernon Electric and Co, and three business houses by W H Evans valued at 80000. Creager brothers filling station 15000, Coca Cola cold storage 8000, and at least 25000 in residences. A new 3100 Presbyterian church is planned along with other major structures.

Vernon Lions Visit New Electra Club Thursday

Four local Lions attended Electra’s newly formed Lions club meeting despite high winds and cold weather. The Electra club, organized three weeks ago, has 26 charter members. A charter presentation and Open meeting are set for March 20 with ceremonies.

Announcement states a motor stage line will begin Monday from Vernon to Electra under R F E Dorsey, a unit of the three line syndicate already running Wichita Falls to Plainview and Lubbock. Regular schedules will be maintained.

Local Church Members Contribute to Mission

Rev L P B Kopp pastor of the Central Christian church announced yesterday that for eight months over 900 dollars has been paid into the church treasury by the congregation for outside missions and benevolent work. This is a splendid showing. The fiscal year closes June 30 and it is hoped the fund will be added to greatly by year end.

Mrs Myrtie Tlrman of Paeuls Valley Ohio seeks assistance from the sheriff to locate her father C Williams or her brother George Williams. She has four children and almost no funds while her husband Robert Tlarmen worked on a farm by the day but left last week. She says she lived on a farm near Paeuls Valley and has heard they may be in Vernon. Sheriff’s deputies have been unable to locate them up to today.

Esker Curtis Named Captain Of Christian College Team

Esker Curtis son of Mr and Mrs Ned Curtis of this city has been elected captain of the Christian college baseball team at Abilene where he is a sophomore. He is praised for a strong lineup and sensational play in both baseball and football. Curtis and Wallace Baird form the battery for Vernon High School in earlier years, with Curtis noted as a standout catcher and performer.

Two Couples Arrested in Vernon Rooming House Case

Four people were taken from a Vernon rooming house by deputy marshals D. Lewis and H. G. Wall after a husband from Wichita Falls filed a charge. Both women were married and had come to Vernon with two men not their husbands. In city court Mayor Harry Mason fined the two men $1 each for vagrancy.

Four White Men Held On Liquor Charges

Five white men charged under federal prohibition laws were detained by Sheriff Edmondson Thursday. The raid occurred at a residence near Hamreld, with barrels of mash destroyed. U S Commissioner Sams and federal officers prepared to handle the cases while the sheriff promised further raids if evidence of collusion emerged.

City Lake Nears Completion In North West Area

The city’s lake northwest of town will be finished in a few days with water from springs. It will cover about seven acres and include concrete reservoirs of 25,000 gallons each for emergency storage. Mayor Harry Mason says full filling may take two to three months, depending on evaporation and soil absorption. The lake sits on a clay underlayer with crystal clear water from constant springs and is planned to become a public park and beautified lake.

Two White Men Nabbed In Box Car Robbery

Two white men were caught in the act of tampering with a box car seal and stealing merchandise for interstate shipment. Porter Worth, Denver, and authorities say the pair are outsiders. Cooper Wheeler and J W Coffee helped detain them. The robbery falls under federal jurisdiction and they will be turned over to federal authorities for felony proceedings.
