Pasture Less and Give the Wheat a Chance

A discussion on pasturing wheat fields warns of spring damage from over grazing. While some claim pasture improves feed efficiency, experiments at multiple stations show little or no yield gain and possible losses of one to three bushels per acre. Heavy grazing can harm wheat, especially in poor seasons.

Wheat Growers Urged to Protect Soil and Feed More

Farmers warned that injurious conditions persist as ground stays wet and spring arrives. Overgrazing risks soil blow and slow wheat recovery, with slow maturity and lower yields possible. Advice: feed more, pasture less, and remove cattle as warm weather begins. Silage hay and roughage can offset extra costs. Southwestern Wheat Improvement Association director H. M. Buiner endorses the plan.
