Architect Named to Draw Plans for New Vernon High

Vernon school board selects Guy A. Carlander of Amarillo as architect to draft plans for a new high school to relieve crowded conditions. A trip to Fort Worth and Dallas will inform design before submission to the board. The $110,000 building is funded by bonds to be sold at a premium, with construction slated after the upcoming term begins.

Couple jailed after raised check at local dry goods store

A young white man staying at a local hotel and a young woman were arrested after a counterfeit check was raised from 6.25 to 60.25 at a dry goods store. The pair, living as a married couple, confessed they were not married. Police found 26 empty paregorie bottles in the room. The woman admitted two years of drug use and received medical treatment after transfer to jail.

Friends of Miss Lea Klingler, former Vernon area resident, received notice of her wedding to W. CL Warnecke of Fort Collins Colorado. The bride, daughter of H A and Mrs Klingler, long prominent near Vernon, moved to Colorado two years ago for her father’s health and has since made Fort Collins home.

Four Events Highlight Hillcrest July 4 Golf Tourney

The Hill Crest July 4 Golf tournament concluded with Hy Rogers and R. B. Gibson tied at 90 for 18 holes, Rogers winning the playoff. A Brunson and D Ashenhurst led a handicap foursome to victory, while J M Haney led another foursome to a 95. Dick Coffee prevailed in the awkward squad event over Less Johnson and others.

Camp Deluxes July Fourth AEE Cathure Headline Event

Vernon residents gathered at the May picnic grounds near Downs for a July Fourth campout lasting into Wednesday. They fished, hunted, swam, and listened to a radio broadcast of Dempsey versus Gibbons indoors. Participants included the Shive family, Piper family, Thompson family, Ross family, Harlow Rouse, and Robert Wright.

Boys Encampment barbecue to open in Vernon next Tuesday

About 20 club boys will attend the district encampment at Vernon for three days. They will travel by auto, sleep in bedding rolls with kitchens under trees, and partake in a barbecue hosted by the Chamber of Commerce. A program from Alan M. College includes instruction and swimming at the city lake with activities at Bourlands and Sharp farm.

Hillcrest Club Hosts Big Fourth of July Program

Hillcrest Club members and guests enjoyed a full day of celebration on July 4. Under president L. E B. Piper, activities included swimming, breakfast, junior and senior dances, 42, golf, a second swimming party, a barbecue supervised by S. A. Castleberry featuring mutton and veal, a tree shaded dinner, and an evening senior dance with festive events. The day was among the year's largest club events.

Vernon man July 4 drowning victim near Electra

Davis 27 nephew of Mrs. G G Rogers of this city drowned near Electra while swimming with a companion. A passing Negro rescued the body after a few minutes in water but he did not recover. Medical staff cited possible heart failure and the body was brought to Vernon for burial at East View Cemetery after services at First Baptist Church with Dr. L J Mims officiating.

Judet in Paris Faces Treason Trial

Ernest Judet former director of the Paris paper VEclair stands trial in Paris on treason charges. Now 72 he was arrested six years after alleged acts. He allegedly collaborated with Germany during World War II and threatens to reveal dealings of prominent Frenchmen if pressed. He fled to Switzerland during the war and is said to have maintained contact with the German diplomatic service.

Readying National Guard Company for Camp Mabry Encampment

Captain Clyde Watts leads a company of National Guardsmen preparing to depart for Camp Mabry in Austin for the annual encampment and joint Army maneuvers from July 15 to 30. The unit trains full time and will travel in government provided special cars, reaching the camp on July 15.

Snake killed after attempting chicken raid at Tolbert

A six foot snake was shot by Mrs. B C Wood of Tolbert after it tried to raid the hen house on July 4. The gardener heard a commotion among the fowls and investigated before firing a single shot from a .438 calibre revolver, ending the reptile's bid for a meal.

Vernon Has Quietest July Fourth in History

Vernon residents reported the quietest July 4 in memory with crowds at Hill Crest Club for a members and guests celebration while others went to Condon Springs and Lake Pauline. No fireworks sounded and streets were quiet. In the afternoon fans followed the Dempsey Gibbons match where Gibbons fell after 15 rounds. Some fishing parties went out but few catches were reported.

Vernon Postoffice posts big 25 percent rise in 1927 28

Vernon Postoffice receipts for the year ending June 30 1928 jumped more than 25 percent over the previous year. Postmaster Parrell cited the largest gain during the last two quarters the first half of 1928, signaling population and business growth in Vernon and surrounding rural areas. Signers listed as quarters for the past two years show figures of S30 and SHT7.33.
