The Vernon fire department annual compilation reports 1922 losses totaling 87,726 with buildings and contents values, insurance carried, and monthly breakdowns. It notes 76 fire alarms, 2 false, plus causes ranging unknown origins, oil stoves, defective wiring, grass fires, and spontaneous combustion.
Dr. Gi C Minor lectured in the district courtroom praising Klan tenets and disputing imperial wizard authority. Mayor Harry Mason introduced him as he claimed Klan membership rose from 3,000 in May 1920 to 800,000 by late 1922 and over 1,000,000 currently, criticizing NAACP and urging Christian faith for Klansmen.
Dick Bowers battled Bert Del Toro to a ten round draw at Antlers Oklahoma last Thursday night in a hard bout described as Bowers best away from home. Del Toro known as The Wop showed early speed but Bowers led the early rounds. later rounds favored Del Toro. Arrangements were made for a rematch at Hugo Oklahoma about three weeks away with Bowers in training. A large crowd attended the Antlers fight.
Wilbarger County records show a marriage license drought as Dan Cupid pauses. County Clerk Brock laments the unusual lapse with no weddings since December, noting New Year nuptials are typically common and Oklahoma couples seek licenses in the county.
The Antelope Athletes defeated Kincheloe 23 to 14 in a closely contested game on Kincheloe ground. Lambert of Antelope hit a center court field goal late in the first half. Jordi added multiple second half field goals. Kincheloe guards Davis and Lambert defended well. Dade fought hard but was outmatched. Antelope and Kincheloe schedule a rematch Wednesday at Antelope court. Lineup: Cate Jordan forwards. Lambert Pavis guards. Whittaker center. Officials Tolley and Pogeets. Time 20 minute halves.
W. Adinus of Fargo plans to move to Lubbock with his wife and two children. C. L. Haulk, another Fargo resident, also leaves for Lubbock after purchasing 100 acres of farm land.
A. S. White of the White and Nowlin Insurance company shows improvement after a severe pneumonia attack. He fell ill about ten days ago, with several days of critical condition, and is now recovering.
Mrs. Frank Edmonson is rapidly regaining health after an appendicitis operation. She has left the hospital where the surgery occurred and returned home to recover under care.
Richard Gillespie, Odell school teacher, had an appendicitis operation at Vernon sanitarium Saturday morning. His condition is reported very satisfactory.
The Baschi concert at Central toristiaa ehurch Friday night drew over 200 music lovers. Maine Alice Baselhi, grand oper contraite, and assistants entertained, with Mes. Vaisehi Mes. praised by Vernon's musicians' club officials for showcasing a superb contralto voice and a compelling program. Signor Armando Louci, violin, and Miss Witherstine on piano received strong acclaim, with encores including Carry Me Back to Virginia and Home on the Range.
County line concerns arise as the Orient railroad faces collapse. Delegation including Hardeman and Wilbarger counties meets in San Angelo seeking a method under Lt Governor Lyne Davers on to exempt the line from interstate rules and run by the state for an undefined period. The line traverses Wilbarger Chillicothe Hardeman Crowell and runs near the Red River with Foard County as the sole rail outlet for part of the area. Officials warn the line cannot operate past March without relief from growing obligations.
Plans for the annual Chamber of Commerce banquet are practically complete with a full program prepared. Vernon speakers are listed and attendance is expected high as ticket sales proceed. the event will be at North Abdali street venue, served by the Phone Neonates club.
The Biliote Home Demonstration Club elected new officers on Tuesday January 2 for the year. President is Mrs Cloud Waggoner first vice president Mrs Evert Yerby second vice president Mrs Ro L Larudts secretary Mrs Brncce Gillis treasurer Mrs Albert Noyes The county demonstration agent Miss Fula Goodfellow spoke and offered guidance for the year. Arrangements for a club room were made and committees appointed. The club will meet at the new club room on June 2 at 2 pm with hostess Mrs A Bowies.
A Wichita Falls High School report details overcrowded conditions with 275 seating. Enrollment rose 50 percent over last year, generating shortages of classrooms and seating. The district plans adding staff and space, including new departments and expanded facilities, to ease crowding and improve instruction.
The Jones and Wiggins garage at Odell was sold to A. M. Polliard & Son as the owners plan a move to Vernon and Los Angeles. Mr. Jones departs with his family, while Mrs. Wiggins has long resided in Odell.
Roberts formerly with Vernon Marble and Granite returns from a trip to Conton, where Cog tins Marble Works headquarters are located, and to Athinta, Gu. Dinghes of Tolbert will be the Sitlewman for the Cog in the company.
The civil docket for the Forty Sista district court will open for a month, with most cases for debt and divorce. Twelve suits seek foreclosures or notes, while eight divorce cases appear on the docket. District Judge James Vo Leak will preside.
In Vernon and Wilbarger counties land has begun to move on the market with multiple recent sales. Transactions include Glaser to McShorten and Rainwater off old town site parcels, Bain to Musek south half of block 16 near Tolbert, Green to Dy on 24 acres north of Pease River, Skipworth to McDonald on 120 acres, and Rudolph Hoffman selling to Walter Hoffman an 80 acre tract south of Vernon.
Daniel Bond, manager of the Vernon Coton Company, returned from a trip to Electra where the Elec tra gin burned Christmas Eve morning. The company plans to rebuild before next season’s opening at an estimated cost of about $20,000 with modern facilities.
KE L Witty, Vernon pioneer, moves his office from behind Robinson Mercantile Co to the Smith's barber shop suite in the same building. TM YL Pierce, Vernon pioneer, will occupy the new quarters with Mr Witty in the upgraded office space.
