Civil War veteran W H Coleman dies at 90 in Texas

W H Coleman aged 90, a Civil War veteran of Hood's Texas Brigade, died at his daughter Nora Murdock's home near Fargo after a long illness. Born August 10, 1882 in Payette County Georgia, he served four years and walked back to Texas from Virginia. He is survived by his widow, eight of nine children, 34 grandchildren, and one great grandchild, with burial at Mastview Cemetery.

Vernon High Grad Sets College Record at Tarleton

Miss Mary Hope Westbrook, Vernon High School class of 1922, carries an A in English and 94 on French, the highest mark in the course at John Tarleton College. She studies eight subjects and 19 hours weekly, active in glee club, plans a tour of state colleges this month, after living with sister Mrs. Jh. A. Vernon in Vernon.

Expert to Speak on Cotton Mills in Vernon

W. D. McNeal a Kingsville Tex textile mill expert is due in Vernon this week to address farmers and business men on opportunities in the Southwest textile industry. He will arrive from Oklahoma City where he spoke on cotton mills. The Vernon meeting is under the Crater of Commerce. A nationwide survey by major mill owners into Texas cotton regions may lead to large mill locations, potentially including Wilbarger County.

Dr H Babasin formerly Armenian spoke at First Methodist to offer Near East relief. He described politics and religion and shared insights from his background. Elmer McPhearson and his sons opened a new hardware and implement store in the Peek building on North Main Street in Vernon. The Chillicothe business has operated twelve years and expects to stock a full line once shipments arrive. Elmer will manage the Vernon location, with a large stock planned for immediate sale.

Renumbering of Streets to Be Discussed Monday

Copfer Brother Dies at Home in Illinois

J W Copfer learns his brother M Coffee died at his home in Buckner Hill Illinois at 10 am Saturday. He held large land holdings in Wilbarger county and visited Vernon annually for years. He was 76 and survived by daughter in law Mrs Dan Coffee of Fargo among others.

One million prewar gold marks, worth about 240000 before the war, were bought last week through a New York exchange by Tl. Bh. Piper, cashier of the Waggoner National Bank. He will keep a portion, distribute the rest to friends, creating a sizeable roll. In prewar days each mark equaled about 24 cents in American money amid wartime currency issues and eroding credit.

County Visited by Snow and Cold Causing Farm Losses

Severe snow blanketed Northwest Texas with inches piling up as temperatures plunged to 15 degrees or lower. Farmers and merchants hailed the cold as a wary omen for insects and fruit crops while livestock suffered and water pipes froze across Vernon area. Wheat crop damage was reported and many expect pest deaths to aid future protection as the cold eased to near 20 degrees Sunday morning.

Church attendance drops as cold weather hits local churches

Sunday services were canceled or poorly attended across area churches due to the chilly weather. Federated Presbyterian Church reported no services and noted the recent heating system installation still requires adjustment. Attendance at other churches was also well below average, with residents staying home to combat the cold.
