Cotton markets show a rebound after a midweek tail spin as New York close hits 84.60 and January deliveries fall to 34.20. Midday prices hover around 32.75 in Vernon and county ginning estimates range with Odell expected to add about 1400 bales. county totals through the day vary.
Arthur Ward Jr a ten year old district agent and son of Mr and Mrs A K Ward will attend the Curtis Publishing Company convention at the Adolphus Hotel Dallas January 10 11 and 12 His mother accompanies him with expenses paid by the company He has sold major magazines including the Saturday Evening Post Ladies Home Journal and Country Gentleman in his district and earned money from the work The convention will include Arkansas and Louisiana district agents and is hosted in Dallas Texas New Mexico references appear in the copy
A. B. Spencer of Crosbyton, president of the West Texas Chamber of Commerce, reported in Vernon that the South Plains show unusually good conditions. He notes a booming 1924 outlook due to a strong season, ample planting, and prosperity not seen since 1917.
Sheriff Frank Namondson recovered a Paige Roadster stolen from N. O. Monroe at White Falls. The car was abandoned in a ditch near Tolbert after leaving a culvert and getting stuck in mud. Officers found revolver and shotgun shells inside. Thieves appeared to plan an Amarillo bound trip but abandoned the car when it could not be moved.
Edward J. Sailstad a former Eau Claire businessman and Dorothy Anderson of Chicago known as the Sunshine Girl were arrested at Napa California after Sailstad confessed to exhuming his best friend's body and burning it in his Wisconsin hunting lodge. He fled with Anderson under the pretense he had perished in the blaze while his wife fights in Wisconsin courts to collect 77000 pounds in life insurance.
The Shriners respond to the Elks challenge to a football game on January 1. Vernon’s Shrine Club, led by S. P. Ingram, says they accept under any terms and name prominent Shriners and gridiron stars to participate, while proposing a hospital fund for distilled Elks.
Billy Bond son of Mr and Mrs Daniel Bond of Paradise street entertained about twenty little guests Thursday for his sixth birthday. The party featured a park visit with swings and see saws, ice cream, cake with six candles, and small Christmas tree with a Santa Claus figure. Mary Jeanette Bennett found a dime and Wiley Bennede found the bottom.
The High School class of 1922 met Tuesday night at the home of E M Vasler and decided to hold an annual banquet on December 26. ATL members will be notified and the place designated later. This will be the third annual banquet for the class.
Leas Meat Markets announces that R. J. Jordan and J. W. Wildman have leased the O Neal meat market on Main Street from Frank O Neal and will continue operating at the same location.
Mrs Rena Watts Mrs Hf Babasin Mrs Homer Rogers and Miss Bobbie Castlebures head committees in charge as 30000 seals are expected to be sold next week. Seals cost one cent and will be placed in drug stores and shops in Vernon for packages. Proceeds support efforts against the white plague which has harmed many homes.
J W Kelner, a Vernon area farmer, sold seven bales of cotton this season for 1259.0, a sum reflecting higher market values. He expects about 35 more bales from his crop, including seed value.
Chester Showers returns from El Dorado Arkansas where he worked at the First National Bank since last March and will join North Texas Hardware Company, a venture in which his brother J L Showers is involved. Before leaving Vernon in March he was with Herring National Bank.
The Wilbarger County Poultry Association prepares for a three day show opening Thursday in the old Record building on Main Street. Walter Burton of Arlington will judge, premium cash awards are planned for ducks geese and turkeys, with free feed and caretakers provided. County club girls have a dedicated department and there is a county wide emphasis on this being Wilbarger’s show.
Mayor Harry Mason announced a December discount of ten percent on city light bills. He said the period sees high usage and the light plant, owned by taxpayers, has money to spare for a holiday relief. The reduction applies only to the December bills.
Miss Lillie Adam daughter of Mr and Mrs J P Adam Tolbert married Paul Herchman of Lockett Wednesday at the Lutheran Church with Rev Markert officiating. A dinner followed at the bride’s home and guests gathered at the groom’s parents’ house later.
Mr and Mrs A Tl Murchison returned Tuesday from a visit with relatives in Farmersville Dallas Terrell and Port Worth. They attended the golden wedding of Mr and Mrs John Murchison parents of Mr Murchison in Parmersville. Five children and six of their grandchildren joined the event. Gifts included various keepsakes and a gift of recovered gold coins.
M. J. Wiiges, District Passenger Agent for the Frisco lines based in Fort Worth, spent Wednesday in Vernon to address railroad interests. He reported freight traffic out of Vernon territory as good but urged improvement in passenger traffic.
Baylor University quarterback Bill Coffey will be home next week to spend the holidays with his parents Mr. and Mrs. F. P. Coffey.
L G Hawkins president of the Waggoner National Bank was elected Illustrious Potentate of Maskat Shrine Temple on Tuesday night. Born December 13, 1868 in Mansfield Louisiana he came to Marshall Texas as a boy and moved through multiple bank and telegraph roles before becoming president of the Waggoner National Bank in 1922. At age 54 he assumed the highest temple office succeeding Wichita Falls Mayor Frank Collier. He has long served in Masonic orders including Grand Commander of Knights Templar Texas and received K C C H degree in Washington. His election comes just before his 55th birthday observed yesterday.
The Federated Clubs Lyceum presented Six Cylinder Love at the Vernon Theater last night. The cast delivered strong performances though some casting choices were off, and the play offered both amusement and a meaningful lesson, earning general audience approval.
I McKinley of Wit barger Hardware Company won the prize for a sales talk for June. A letter to Florence Auto mite store company praised his sales letter, sent to Dallas, then Massachusetts head office, and notified him of the month’s top award.
Government report shows 16.508 bales of cotton ginned in the county up to December 1, compared with 24.002 bales ginned by the same date last year per the Department of Agriculture datum.
A. P. Peck builds a new rent house on the farm south of Vernon Itia and expects completion this week.
Dr L J Mims pastor of the First Baptist Church travels to cats for the Texas Baptists Executive Committee and Text Book Committee meetings. He is noted as a leading Texas educator and former Howard Payne College president, with the Text Book Committee planning science book authors to challenge Darwinian theory.
Mrs Mary Barns and J J Moore of Lubbock married Tuesday afternoon by Justice J Griffiths at his Vernon office. She is a former county resident and widow with children living elsewhere. They plan to live near Lubbock on a farm after a short courtship.
The Duke of Aosta dies in his Turin palace from pneumonia. Other members of the Italian royal family have been summoned to his bedside.
Roy Russell of the Elk Lodge issues a challenge to the Shrine Club for a football game on January 1 to raise funds for Vernon Concert Band uniforms. He notes several former players among Elk members are eager to return to the field and believes the Elks can beat the Shrine Club despite their reputation.
Austin December 18 There are 20 students of foreign birth at the University of Texas. Most are Cosmopolitan Club members and on scholarships. Native countries include Serbia Armenia Belgium Persia China Japan Mexico and Russia with numerous individuals named from each nation.
Misses Lois McGaurhy Doris Waller Maurine Davis Leslie King Ruth Slaney and Miss Chapman are expected home early next week from Penton where they attend the College of Industrial Arts. They will remain at home for the holidays.
Vernon leaders plan a heavy push to secure the 1925 West Texas Chamber of Commerce convention with letters to about 25 towns in West Texas. Vernon aims to host the annual banquet in January as the kickoff, with Mineral Wells already active and two outside speakers slated for the event.
Mrs. M. B. Baker purchased the Baker Brothers Drug Store for 10000 dollars. The transaction involved N. B. Hodge as receiver and potential partnership arrangements with FL W. Smith. The store, in notably good condition, is to be operated by Mr. Anker as The Baker Drug House.
Shive school pupils will give a program next Thursday afternoon December 2 starting at 3 o clock. The event will be at the school with no admission charge. After the program there will be a V. T. A. business meeting.
