Vernon officials warn teachers may resign as rents and scarce rooms deter recruitment. Principal candidates D W Hooper and J P Bickley seek affordable housing. board studies converting vacant school spaces for living quarters to address the shortage and curb profiteering.
R B Richardson of Vernon reports corn wind damage near Fargo where stalks lay flat and twisted. He expects light overall damage, with yields around forty bushels per acre from crops already maturing. He also notes large sorghum patches and a larger maize acreage this year in fine condition.
Mrs Esther Key returned Friday from Eastern markets where she bought full millinery. She found many new things and says Vernon women will see many surprises in headgear this fall.
Vernon residents are warned to obtain city permits before tapping water and sewer mains. City Engineer A J Robinson says unpermitted connections threaten system integrity and public health. violators face fines. He adds no digging in public alleys without city supervision and bond. The report also notes a separate violation of toilet paper use in toilets, which officials say will be enforced.
Nearly thirty visiting teachers are due in Vernon for a joint city and county teachers institute next week. Amid scarcity of rooms, residents are urged to aid by offering accommodations. Contact County Superintendent J N Fulcher or City Superintendent B F Sisk. The rural and city teachers will attend as required by law, with events at the high school building.
Bridge construction across Paradise creek on the Vernon-Oklainion highway is suspended for several days while awaiting additional material. Contractor C A Swinburn says concrete forms are ready and material should arrive soon to resume work at full speed. Representatives of Contractor H K McCollum are in Vernon preparing to begin paving once preliminary arrangements are settled.
Farmers north of the Pease river belt hit by June hail report difficulty threshing due to tangled straw, per M F P Anderson of the area who was in Vernon Friday. Some fields once thought destroyed are yielding fairly well, Anderson added.
John Dempsey says Wilbarger county is the best country he has seen as he prepares to move his family back to Vernon after leaving for Cooper in Delta county about two years ago. He notes rumors he is in the oil business are incorrect.
Coty agent N. R. Tisdal left yesterday for Childress to attend the rally of the agricultural clubs of Childress county and take part in the program. From Childress he will go to Lubbock to meet Mrs. Tisdal and their children, who have been visiting his sister in Seminole. He expects to return to Union about Friday.
Rain last week damaged Doans country wheat with many shocks sprouting. Claude Hamilton, in Vernon on business, reports the grain misgrading will be substantial as sprouting lowers quality and value of the crop.
Mr and Mrs Robert Houssell Mrs J G Hawkins and daughter Miss Ruth Hawkins and Mary Myatt Shive are expected to arrive home Thursday night from Long Beach Calif A strike of trainmen at Los Angeles has interfered with train service and they may be delayed.
Willi Teach at Electra. Misses Willie Carroll Mary Weatherall and Ruby Spears have accepted positions to teach in the city schools at Electra. Miss Carroll had been elected to a position in the Crowell schools but has resigned.
State officials announce record cash premiums for the Dallas Victory Fair livestock show with Swift & Company donating 1000 for special premiums across breeds including Hereford Shorthorn Angus and Red Polled steers. Pioneer Packers and Armstrong Packing also offer cash rewards for champions. Sheriff W A Ish reports arrest of Sapulpa suspects linked to theft of C J Barrells Buick along a sprawling getaway. The youths, 18 to 25, are in Denison jail awaiting trial as their car pursuit ended near Pease River after the Denver wreck.
Eight year old Pierce Alexander son of Mr and Siz.hak Alexander had his right forefinger caught in the Hotel Vernon door Wednesday. The finger was practically severed but doctors say the member is stuck together and likely to heal with little permanent injury.
Burk Key test machinery is laid out on the ground near the park. Repairs have been completed and the rig is now in condition for the test.
The Bowers OF Companys spudded in on its well north of Lowa Park Saturday morning. Thompson Bros. of Elec tra hold the drilling contract. Promoters promise rapid progress, barring any trouble that may arise from material availability or stability issues.
Drillers resume work on the Aeton well in the Eliott community after weeks of delay awaiting casing. Progress had been good before shutdown, and operations have now restarted.
Grain on ground as one of the largest Wilbarger county crops prompts farmers and grain dealers to plan storage and routes. Freight congestion, tied to a nationwide railroad shopmen strike, hampers marketing. Elevators, including Kell Milling Vernon and Sewell Grain, report large receipts but limited shipments despite permits and export facilities.
Awalt of Crescent Cove reports 110 nerves of cotton with friends predicting three fourths of a bale per acre. After hail damaged the first plant, he replanted and now has a solid stand loaded with blooms and bolls. He cites selling a 100 acre lease in block 16 section 28 to Tilly Hughes Oil Co of New York for 5000, located about a mile and a half northwest of Tolbert.
Elder Tom Walker of Bonham announces arrival in Vernon with his family about September 1 to take the pastorate of the local Church of Christ. Paster Ned Curtis begins revival the second Sunday in September with J Antwine of Bonham leading song services as assistant.
Holcomb announces opening on September 8 offering teacher training college preparatory intermediate work bookkeeping shorthand and typewriting along with salesmanship. Faculty includes M. Vv. McDougal Mrs Exa Fay McDougal Vera Jo Jackson Beulah Burke Emerson Holcomb and Ida DD Baker. Professor Holcomb notes better attendance outlook than in past corporate periods.
Paul Pierce, formerly with Swart wood & Company and long employed in a Burk Burnett harness shop, was in Vernon Monday arranging to relocate his family to Childress. He owns a home in that city.
Lewis and family prepare to relocate from Vernon to Mangum Oklahoma. Lewis works in oil fields near Burkburnett while Mrs Lewis and her helper maintain the Mangum home.
Miss Jenie Leak of Goodnight sold a five room house in Southeast Vernon to Vernon McDougal. McDougal will take possession on September 1. The transaction was negotiated by J R Jones.
Judge R. W. Wall of Amarillo travels to Vernon on business. He serves as associate justice of the Court of Civil Appeals. Judi Hal previously resided in Vernon and is noted in local references.
