Negro Boy in Jail Charged With Forgery
A 16 year old negro, using the name James McKiney, is in county jail on forgery charges after presenting an $85 check at a local bank. He claimed Mrs R L Pyle gave him the check, said he would have Mr Pyle identify it, then vanished. Officers arrested him later that afternoon.

Joint Teachers Institute to Be at Wichita Falls
The Joint County Teachers Institute will convene at Wichita Falls September 10 to 5 at the Junior College auditorium. Over 1,000 teachers from Wichita, Clay, Archer, Wilbarger and Baylor counties and Vernon, Onanah, and Chillicothe districts are expected. State superintendent S. M. N. Raids Cause Fines for Negroes in County Sheriff Busy
Sheriff Frank Edmonson and deputies conducted raids Saturday night arresting several Black residents in town and county. A house near West Wilbarger yielded ten gallons of beer. a man and woman were fined $25 each. A speeding stop led to fines for the Black driver and drunken arrests for two white men. A car with six Negroes produced a gallon of beer and $847.40 in fines. In rural Oklahton area seven Black individuals were fined for dice shooting, each receiving a $29.85 penalty.

Plans Completed for Harrold Paving Project
County Engineer Jobin reports Harrold area paving plans are finished awaiting approval from a U S Bureau of Public Roads engineer. After federal review, the project goes to Austin for state approval, bids will be advertised, a contract let, with about five miles to pave as grading nears completion. Pouring Concrete on West Wilbarger Completed Tomorrow
Work on the pavement on West Wilbarger street, linking Jolly waving at Tolar street to the city limits, is expected to finish tomorrow barring unforeseen delays. Contractor J. Y Foty started the mixer and poured concrete Saturday. by that night about a quarter of 1400 feet was done. The project costs about 7800 dollars, with one third City funded and two thirds funded from State aid. Application for aid was made by the site through the Commissioners Court and presented in person by County Engineer John B. Nahers.

Country club adds diving stands at Lake Island pool
A diving stand a swing and a water slide are under construction at Hill Crest Country Club two miles north of here. The apparatus replaces old wooden stands and is made of galvanized iron pipe. The equipment sits on the island's south end and will be ready for use later this week.

Hail Storm Destroys Cotton Crop Near Vernon
A northwest hailstorm and high winds Saturday night wiped out or badly damaged about IMM acres of cotton thirteen to fourteen miles north of Vernon. A one mile by six mile strip of land suffered extensive loss. farmers including W. Wolf Stroud and K. Olive reported heavy damage. East of the main area fields owned by W. Anderson and others were damaged lightly. The storm began near Pleasant Valley school house and extended toward Odell and Farge, with many lacking hail insurance.

Mr. and Mrs. J. Kenmoker and family of Harlingen are here visiting friends and relatives. The Schmokersa, former county residents, still own land in Lockette community. They lived away about five years after moving to Harlingen where they bought land. They say they would not move back to Verenon County under any condition.
Fire damages negro home in Flats at North Vernon
The interior of DeWitt Waldron’s bungalow in the North Vernon negro settlement was damaged last night when an oil stove left burning ignited the interior. Neighbors raised an alarm and the fire department arrived in time to save the house. Damage amount not estimated.

Lake Kemp Claims Another Victim
Vernon Groves 18 of Oklaunion died Sunday afternoon in Lake Kemp while swimming with a friend. He was seized by cramps and sank in twelve feet of water despite his companion's call for help. Divers recovered the body in 25 minutes. Dr. W L Rhodes of Wichita Falls attempted resuscitation for two hours. The body was returned to Park for funeral arrangements and joint efforts marked another tragic lakeside incident involving local workers.
