Manager BR H Coffee of the Wilbarger County Pair is posting signs across Wilbarger and adjoining counties to promote next month’s fair. Preparations at the fair grounds near completion with improvements nearly finished by month end. A large turnout is expected as top horses from the circuit will race, stalls may be added for extra horses, and exhibits from county communities and clubs are being organized. Attendance forecast to exceed prior years with stronger attractions.

Barn Burns at Carpenter Farm North of Pease River
A large barn on George Carpenter’s farm near Pease River, off the highway, burned Wednesday night along with 6459 bales of hay and other contents. The origin is unknown and the loss is about 8500 dollars, largely insured.

Child struck by garden hose blow in Vernon
Johnny Walker twelve year old son of Josh Walker was struck in the bend with a garden hose last Saturday night and sank rapidly at noon today, remaining unconscious with little hope for recovery. Howard Wilson, a Vernon former resident, is reportedly in danger. Family members were summoned to Vernon to be at his bedside.

The Vernon Chamber of Commerce will launch late summer booster trips starting with a visit to Elliott next Thursday night. Driver deserts car after crash near Elliott
A high speed car chase near Elliott ended when the vehicle overturned. The young man, who had rented the car in Electra, fled on foot toward a field to reach a nearby telephone to summon the garage to recover the vehicle. Sheriff Edmondson and a deputy secured the scene.

Vernon City Cancels Light Company Franchise
Vernon City Commission cancels the Vernon Electric and the Texas Electric and Light Company franchise after finding violations of Sections 3 4 and 10. District Court to Open Monday with Heavy Dockets
District Court opens here next Monday with a strong criminal docket and a heavy civil docket. The grand jury meets Monday morning to organize and take up criminal cases. There are more liquor violation cases pending than ever in the county. Many cases were moved to federal court at Wichita Falls, but Sheriff Frank Edmondson and deputies have arrested many more, delaying liquor case consideration. More than 200 Vernon voters signed a petition asking the city to sell electric plant equipment to Vernon Electric and Tee Company at cost plus delivery charges and to fix electricity rates to be sold by the firm. The City Commission set September 11 for a public hearing on the proposal, with letters notifying the petitioners. The petition proposes resolving a dispute between Vernon Electric and the city, and under the charter the ordinance must be passed as petitioned or submitted to a vote.

First Bale of Cotton Brought In by Koontz and McCaleb
