Basin Grazing Lands Stocked to Capacity
Secretary of the Interior plans to permit more cattle and sheep grazing on public lands to boost meat production. District 8, covering much of the Utah Basin, is already near capacity with 270 million sheep and 15,000 cattle. Voluntary reductions have begun due to overgrazing, with some units trimming stock by 25 percent. Weather has been moist recently, but dry years may follow, prompting efforts to increase feed production. Rowena Richens plans winter in Salt Lake City after a trip to Canada.
