Senate Approves 31.8 Million for Ute Indians of Basin
The Senate on Thursday approved a 31.842 million appropriation for Ute Indians in Utah and Colorado, following House action. Funds will be credited to the Utes tribal trust and earn 4 percent interest, about 1.273 million annually, with further Congress action needed before spending. The payment stems from a 1868 treaty and land takings dating to 1891 to 1909, seeking compensation for 4,000,000 acres and forest lands later seized.
