Old Slaugh Ranch Gains Multiple Owners and Winter Lamb Feed
The long history of the 820 acre Slaugh ranch near Vernal, Utah, traces through owners from George A. Slaugh in 1903 to Ferry Hadlock, Reno Ranchez, and the Merrells, with current plans by Karl Karren to run a water fed lamb operation. Karren rebuilt irrigation with a river pumping plant and diesel power, aiming for 1800 feet of underground pipe, 150 acres of corn and 150 acres alfalfa, and winter feed for 1400 head of ewes plus cattle. He notes chopping hay saves space and labor, storing corn ears, and using windrow chopping reduces cost while providing better feed for lambs.

Farmer Plans Angus Herd to Clean Fields and Boost Crops
Mr Karren, enthusiastic about irrigation, notes soil tests from Utah State University showing phosphate richness. He believes river water adds phosphate and, despite liking farming, laments low profits in sheep work. He shifts toward corn and alfalfa as crops that convert to meat and beets.
