Graveside Rites Held Tuesday for Lloyd Bingham

Lloyd Bingham died at 4 53 p m in Tron County Hospital after an operation. Graveside services directed by Alvin Rowden of Vernal Third Ward were held at Maeser Fairview Cemetery with Dr Ray Spendlove and Dr Dan Price officiating. American Legion conducted rites. pallbearers included Dan Price Ray Spendlove Ralph Ashby Donald Ashby Glenn Cooper and Hugh Caldwell. A separate service had been held earlier at Cedar Eighth Ward. Bingham served as sanitarium for Utah Biota Department of Health covering five counties.

Uintah High Names New Basketball Coach

Uintah High School announced the appointment of Bast Johnson as basketball coach. Johnson, a North Cache High alum and Utah State University graduate, will arrive Friday and assume duties Monday. He stands six feet five inches and has served as a marine corps officer and physical education instructor.

New Pastor Takes Post at Vernal Baptist Church

The Rev. Andy Underhill arrived in Vernal from Hobbs New Mexico to serve as pastor of the local Baptist Church. He came with his wife and noted their travels through New Mexico Oklahoma and Texas. The couple praised the area and reception before attending the Utah Baptist Association convention in Moab to hear progress reports and discuss missionary work via radio and television.

Vernal Amateur Golf Tournament Scheduled Sept 28 29

The Vernal Amateur Golf Tournament will be held at Vernal Empire Golf and Country Club on Saturday and Sunday September 28 and 29. Qualifying rounds must be completed by September 24. The event features four flight trophies and a two day medal play format with 18 holes each day and foursome pairings. Named past winners include Norm Asmus Jack Seabrook Ralph Ashton and Deb Casada.

Funeral Services Honor Bill Mantle Pioneer of Ashley Valley

Funeral services for William Mantle 79 long time Vernal resident were held Monday at 2 pm at Vernal Mortuary by J B Harvey Madsen. Mantle died Thursday night at his home from age related causes after a month in Salt Lake hospital. Born March 23 1873 in Washington County he moved to Vernal before Christmas 1881 as a pioneer. He was the youngest of five siblings. his brothers and sister married and two brothers moved to the Big Thorn country in 1895 to operate cattle and barge ranching. The family later reunited in Vernal to establish a 500 acre ranch near the area.

Bow Munters Find Deer Elusive as Season Winds Up

Bow Munters bow hunt ends with tougher conditions as wet forage scattered deer. About 10 residents of Vernal bagged deer. 60-member club had 15 successful archers. Maurice Henry of Glines claimed first deer. George M. Calder took the heaviest at 166 pounds. Calder won 1st prize in Ashley Valley Sport Shop contest. Max McLean 2nd prize with quiver and arrows. Verdin Goodrich won $10. Max Blewart received a Bear Cub bow. The season likely extends to 30 days next year. archers with regular permits may use legal bow equipment during the general hunt.

Vernal Kid's Day Parade and Contests Set for Sept 28

Elk Hunt Yields 52 Percent Success in Mt Dutton Unit

Officials released figures for the season full elk hunt in the Mt Dutton unit showing 13 elk taken by 23 permit holders for a 52 percent success rate. The hunt ran August 1 to September 4 with additional hunts scheduled later in the fall around the United Mountains. Permits were awarded by public drawing at the State Capitol on August 29.

New Type Meters On Trial On Main Street

A new look in parking meters appears on the north side of Main Street between Vernal Avenue and 1st West Btreela. The new meters accept pennies nickels or dimes and aim to provide better service while reducing maintenance, with features to reject mutilated coins and avoid jams.

Uintah School District building and grounds department, led by John Insmilth, oversees major upgrades including asphalt laying across 14 000 square yards, repainting 22 classrooms, and hallway lighting at Avalon School.
