Mary Marie Porter Diary Opens With Family Strife
The diary begins in Andersonville with Mary recounting her birth, a fated marriage of her father the famed astronomer, and a mother torn by divorce. She describes a fractured home, a strained step toward Boston, and a school year shadowed by gossip, secret clubs, and clashes over Mary’s identity as Mary versus Marie, amid a budding sense of betrayal and longing for her mother.
