A female black bear attacked a ewe while her cubs lingered. trapper Acel Rowley and helpers pursued the bears with dogs, and Mrs Merrell shot the mother bear with a .243 rifle, leaving the cubs at large for later tracking.

Voter turnout surged in the primary as residents picked GOP and Democratic candidates for county offices. Roland Merkley beat J Ross Merrell 727 to 667 for four year county commissioner to face Democrat Harold McKee, while Blayne Morrill led Bernard Larsen 1005 to 685 for the two year post. On the Dem side Wayne Pickup edged Ray Lee 484 to 340 to face Morrill. Sheriff race saw Stepubliy con Duane Paulson 586 to 238. Democrat Norman R. Fletcher 640 over Herbert Snyder 244. County attorney GOP Whitney Diamond won 887 to 709 over Tay Nash. Statewide, Senator Wallace Bennett defeated J Bracken Lee 886 to 743. King beat Rampton 653 to 152 for the Senate race, and Burton won 615 to Garfield 540 for the First District congress seat. Democratic attorney general candidate Wenderson led 356 to 200 over Croft Kesler, with Kesler to face Pratt Kesler in November. Two precincts reported no Democratic votes.

Maeser Boy Injured In Saw Mishap At Home
A 20 year old Maeser boy Quinn Thacker son of Mr and Mrs Ted Thacker was treated for injuries from a ski saw accident at home Saturday. He moved behind his father as the blade slowed and the saw cut a shoulder muscle collar bone and near the lungs requiring blood transfusions at the hospital. He was home from the hospital Monday and reported improving.
