Trading Stamps Raise Food Prices in Utah Study
Utah State University economists Nolte Anderson and Lamborn report that Salt Lake City supermarkets adopting trading stamps pushed average retail food prices up about 4 percent over the city during a three month period, costing a typical family roughly $4 extra monthly for groceries. They note that stamp redemption offers about $2.50 in merchandise per month per family and warn that those who collect less will bear higher costs. The study observes a 40 percent sales jump after stamps launched in November 1954, with a later 25 percent premium over prestamp levels by October 1960 after competing stamps entered the market.
