Byron Elwood Mathis, 18, son of Elwood and Roma Mathis, died in a Richfield hospital after a severe brain injury from an incident last Saturday night when dragged and kicked by a horse. Mathis is linked to Roma Eaton, sister to Mrs Jesse Haws.
A youth tossed from a saddle drone during a Loa rodeo in Wayne County was dragged by a frightened horse after his foot became stuck in the stirrup. He arrived at Richfield hospital ten minutes later and stopped breathing. An iron lung was used but revival failed. Survivors include his parents and sister Jeannine of Price and grandmother Mrs Lucilla Eaton of Salt Lake City.
A tense highway bill faces final action before adjournment as a CPA convention meets in Vernal on September 19 with plans for a Flaming Gorge visit. A large group of Bureau of Reclamation officials will travel by bus to the site.
Gulf Oil Corp reports an oil show in its Choke Cherry Canyon unit in Duchesne County Utah at 4100 feet in the Wasatch formation after reaching 3500 feet. A swab test on the 20 foot sand interval yielded apparent good results but commercial production depends on forthcoming tests and casing plans. The company will decide in about two weeks if the find can be developed.
