Carter's Hill Creek Wildcat on Flat Rock Mesa Utah
A 136 foot steel drilling rig sits on Flat Rock Mesa amid Utah’s barren wilderness near Vernal. The Hill Creek project, started June 1955 after years of leasing battles, spans 28 000 acres and a chain of Indian and private lands. A camp of 48 people, 17 trailers, water, electricity, and a rough 90 mile access route sustain the operation as crews pursue a deep test below 6 000 feet to determine if the wildcat yields oil or gas.
