Union High to be Ready by 1950

Plans for a new Union County high school to be built on the Duchesne line with a $500000 project, site purchases, and dual-county approval target a fall 1950 opening. Architects Fetzer and Fetzer guide blueprints while the education departments coordinate Indian affairs and funding.

Vernalite Elected Vice President of League Auxiliary

Mrs. C. R. Hopkins, wife of Vernal city councilman, was elected vice president of the Utah Municipal League auxiliary at the annual Logan meeting August 28 30. Mrs. Curtis L. Miner, wife of Logan’s mayor, was elected president. Vernal attendees included Mayor and Mrs. B. H. Stringham and several local residents. The next annual meeting will be at St George.

Men 18-25 Must Register by Sept 18 in Vernal

Uintah county men between 18 and 25 must register with the new peacetime draft board in the Coltharp building in Vernal by Sept 18. Clerk Milda Slaugh says all eligible men must register regardless of prior military service or reserve status, with about 400 of an estimated 900 having already registered.

Vernal Streets Get New Look as Gutter Project Advances

Vernal moves ahead with a 108000 street and gutter program. Twenty percent completed includes sidewalks on 2nd North 1st South 4th East 2nd East and sections of 2nd South and 2nd North. Curbs laid on 1st South South Vernal Avenue 1st East and 1st North.

Final county tally shows 10 383 votes cast with 8721 Republican ballots and 1642 Democratic. John B Boyden leads Democratic slate for governor with Heber Bennison Jr for secretary of state and Reese M Reese for state auditor. Dillman defeats Eskelson for state senator in Uintah Duchesne with 96 vote margin. Republican totals include Mabey 456 vs Lee 292. Wilson 381 for U S senator. Hansen 468 for supreme court. Anderson 484 for secretary of state. Preece 384 for auditor. Clayton 314 for treasurer. Kesler 387 for attorney general. Greenwood 364 for superintendent. Brockbank 218 for district judge. Blackham 307 for district attorney.

Utah Education Meeting to Feature Noted Speaker

Utah Education Association schedules its second annual professional leadership meeting in Vernal October 28 to 30 with Dr R F Hawk and L E Parmenter as speakers. Hawk will give the keynote at the banquet and advise on discussion groups while Parmenter will open sessions and advise on public relations. Delegates will attend the opening night banquet.

Second appeal issued for used clothing destined for Belgium as Uintah high school students collect items for European students and teachers. Wayne Batty and fellow sponsors urge clean mended garments. 1500 attended the county rodeo with Florence Sprouse named Uintah County queen.

Mott Family Returns From 10 Day Ohio Trip

Mr and Mrs William Mott Sr and Mr and Mrs Warren Mott return on Aug 24 from a ten day vacation visiting Ohio St Louis Denver and other nearby cities and states. They traveled home through Nebraska and stayed with Robert Kowalaski and the Conaway family in Washington Court House Ohio.

Uintah district eyes higher first day enrollment

Labor Day marked the Uintah school system as 2623 students registered on the first day, with Uintah high reporting 632 and Alterra high 221. Officials noted last year’s total 2736 and projected higher totals as registration continues, aided by a school-board aeration week and an Iron Springs outing for staff.

Graveside services for Calvin S Bennion son of Mr and Mrs Ashley Bennion Vernal killed in action at Mindanao Philippine Islands July 4 1945 will be conducted Thursday at 3 30 pm in Vernal Memorial Park by officers of Witbeck Post No 11 American Legion Private first class at the time of his death he was born June 30 1924 a son of Ashley and Emma Allen Bennion He was a graduate of Alin tah high school and a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter day Saints He is survived by his parents and a brother Allen Bennion

Uintah County 4-H Fair Highlights Style Dress Review

The Uintah County 4-H Fair wrapped with a style dress revue at Imperial Hall on September 2. Forty clubs from 14 communities entered exhibits across home economics and individual projects while the new fair building hosted demonstrations. Winners Dean Frostones and Myra Woolley from Vernal will advance to state contests, with team demonstration by Dawna Hall of Dry Fork.

Uintah Adds Attraction An Alligator Comes to Green River

Uintah Basin residents report a sightings of an alligator in the Green River about three miles north of the Jensen bridge. Dale and Norman Merrell described a log that began swimming and screamed like a pig as it surfaced. Sightings have been common this summer and locals question whether it is a real crocodile or a misidentified log.

Basin Flying Service Changes Owners

Effective Sept. 1 Erland Preece took over management and ownership of Basin Flying Service. He purchased the service from Acel Hall, and in August they bought the remaining third from Charles Riddling. Preece has been part owner since November 1947 and has been secretary of the National Farm Loan Assn for the past two years.

Mineral Testing Suspended Near Brush Creek Site

Voorhies corporation officials disclosed Wednesday that testing of Uintah Minerals holdings on Brush Creek seven miles north of Varnel has been suspended. Plans for future development are uncertain at the moment, with details still being finalized and property coverage under review.
