Indian Fair Crowds Endure Weather In Uintah Basin

The UBIC Indian Fair drew thousands despite rain and wind as the Uintah Basin marked the three day celebration with tributes to Harmon Sewards Sr at Provo and Vernal services. Notable speakers included church and civic leaders who praised Sewards’ long service as patriarch. The celebration featured Native American participants, landmark dedications, and discussions of roads, education, and agriculture, concluding with hopes for clearer skies next year.

Sunset Service at Vernal Seminary Site Sunday Evening

Sunset services for the dedication of the Ver nal Seminary name plate will be held Sunday at 6 30 PM on the Uintah high school lawn. C R Hopkins chairs the program with speakers Mayor Cooper and H B Calder. Uintah high school band, led by Carl Engar, will perform as the stake MIA conducts a conjoint outdoor service with full stake membership attending.

Vogue to Run Continuous Shows for Rodeo Days

Vogue will present continuous daily shows during Vernal rodeo days starting at p.m. each day. Mrs. E R LG Cooper, manager, announced early shows to accommodate large crowds. Three special pictures will be shown: The Outcast on Thursday, Way Out West on Friday, and Woman Chases Man on Saturday.

Vernal Storms Leave Uintah County in Turmoil

Four days of freak rain storms across Uintah county caused damage from a lightning strike on a Vernal home to a dead milk cow, washed bridges, and flooded roads. A fire destroyed the Gurr home Monday night. E W Evans box was struck, fuse plugs scattered. Fort Duchesne road openings improved by Monday, while Vernal and surrounding areas faced several hours of darkness and power repairs. Precipitation totals ranged from .04 to .48 inches across days Saturday through Monday with Tuesday at .23 inches.

President Colton Addresses Large Crowd Sunday

Visiting in his hometown weekend was Don B Colton a Utah congressman for twelve years and former president of the Eastern States LDS mission. He spoke at a Vernal stake meeting and Sacrament service with three wards combining then at a funeral for Harmon Sewards Sr before heading to Salt Lake City with his two daughters Mera and Gwen Gatton accompanying him.

Beekeeper James Ellifritz Dies in Ashley Valley

Funeral services for James Solo mon Ellifritz 71 prominent beekeeper of Ashley Valley will be held Friday at 10 am in the Davis ward chapel with Bishop Alfred E Simper presiding He served as inspector of bees for Uintah County for many years and resided at the Ellifritz farm and orchard in Davis ward Death occurred at his home Tuesday night from cardiac decomposition augmented by miner s consumption He was born March 10 1862 in Mineral County West Virginia and moved to Ashley Valley as a young man He is survived by thirteen children and many relatives including grandchildren and great grandchildren Interment will be at Vernal Memorial Park Meanwhile Jack Cook son of Mr and Mrs Joseph T Cook is improving after a serious accident and will delay his trip to Kansas City for school of Television and Radio

Enlargement of Bleachers at Fair Grounds Started

Uintah County commissioners granted the rodeo committee’s request to repair and enlarge the grandstand at the fair grounds to accommodate crowds for the upcoming Verna] Rodeo. County to provide lumber pipes and labor up to 245 dollars. Also discussed Powder Wash road repairs, Diamond mountain bridges, grazing funds cut, and letters to senators and representatives protesting the reduction. The school board indebtedness and sinking fund report was presented by Driver E. Smith.

Pen Term for Knife Assault Given Worker

John Huggins, 42, World War veteran, was tried in district court for assault with a deadly knife against Victor Peterson at Dinosaur National Monument. He received an indeterminate sentence up to five years in state prison after a jury found him guilty. the trial was the session's only jury proceeding, with Judge Abe W. Turner presiding and Wallace Caler Pai serving as defense counsel.

Utah State Fair Dates Set for September 25 to October 2

The 1837 Utah State Fair, the fifty-seventh exhibit, runs September 25 through October 2. Fair manager Ernest S. Holmes reports strong national and state entries, with increased space requests from machinery firms. Officials expect widespread participation from agribusiness, 4-H, and FFA groups, with total cash premiums around 25000 across seven departments.

Oil mix for U S 40 east of here prepared in Craig

Utah road officials supervised a hot oil mix for the highway between Vernal and the Colorado line. Gilsonite and Texan refinery oil are used, mixed at high temperature in Craig, loaded into tanks, and hauled to Utah for spreading while hot. The process is not experimental and has been used for years.
