Roosevelt Fire Leaves Downtown Block Aflame

A major Roosevelt blaze knocked out seven downtown businesses with damage estimates surpassing 500000. The fire began about 4 30 a m in a storage building, drew in crews from multiple cities, counties and service companies, and cut the main telephone line leaving Roosevelt largely without service early on. Vernal Fire Department joined at 5 a m as efforts continued, by 7 30 am the fire was described as coming under control.

Five Die in Wreck Near Rangely Colorado

Five people perished when a car wrecked about 18 miles north of Rangely on Colorado Highway 4. The victims include Earl Dick, 40, and his wife, 42, along with Cecil Sprathing Ray Bigger and Bill Parker. Vehicle speed was estimated between 80 and 100 mph. All victims except Mrs. Dick worked for Linneman Construction.

Three Injured In Maeser Town Two-Car Crash

Three occupants of a sedan were hospitalized after a two car collision at 10 15 am Tuesday at the Old Mine corner in Maeser Hattie Warby 51 of Maeser driver of the 1961 Ford suffered leg injuries and bruises She was treated and released Sybil Collier 23 of Vernal had a broken right leg and her daughter Cheryl Collier 14 suffered head injuries All three were taken to the hospital by ambulance Mrs Colfer later was taken to a Salt Lake hospital Vern Vansen 67 of Roosevelt was involved Continued on page 8

Hall of Fame Football Star To Speak At Vernal Booster Club

Slarry A. Stuhldreher, assistant to the VP of U S Steel, will speak at Vernal Booster Club on Thursday in 7 11 Cafe. An All American quarterback and National Football Hall of Fame inductee, he coached 11 years at the University of Wisconsin and served as athletics director and football coach there. He has written two football books.

Dam Recreation Area Basic Plan Completed

The National Park Service has finished basic planning for recreation facilities in the Wiaming Gorge Recreation Area. Construction is underway at Lucerne Valley and Antelope Flat with roads, ramps, water systems, and soon campgrounds and sewers. The 1964 fiscal year will add lodging, meals, marinas, ferries, and tours at four site groupings, with proposals due by December 1, 1962.

Steinaker Area Recreation Plan Outlined by Chamber

C P Lewis reported Vernal Chamber of Commerce on Steinaker Reservoir recreation progress. Road grading nears completion and gravel work continues. Parking areas planned for 30 and 35 cars with a third for 100. Trails and picnics to follow. Wildlife and sunset views noted. Activities include fishing boating and skiing. Frontier Airlines adds two Convair Mighty to Vernal from Oct 28. National Park Service to negotiate a contract for ferry service at Flaming Gorge.

Adame Son Dies In Accidental Shooting

Bulletin reports 18 year old Denny Adame of Matter was killed Wednesday at 4 pm when a pistol he handled accidentally fired. The bullet entered his nose and head. Deputy Sheriff Wm V Moth investigated the fatal accident.

County Holds Emergency Meet As International Crisis Forms

Uintah County officials met in the county building to align Civil Defense plans amid the U S Russia Cuba missile crisis. Attendees included county commissioners the clerk Civil Defense director sheriffs office Vernal City and Utah Highway Patrol. Residents with basement homes urged to prepare supplies for five days including bedding food water a shovel batteries lights first aid supplies radio and waste disposal bags.

City and County Formulate Firetruck Bids

Vernal City representatives met Uintah County Commissioners to formulate bids for a fire truck. Bids will be invited soon as Alton H. Peterson of the Bureau of Reclamation participates. The commission started drafting a contract on roads crossed by the Vernal Project canal with paving to be funded by the federal government.

Real Good Hunting Seen Last Weekend in County

Very fine bucks were seen as two elk were reportedly killed illegally, per district game manager Bob Jensen. Hunters urged to identify game before shooting while no hunting accidents were logged. Roads were rough but improving, with high elevations yielding best deer results as season nears closing October 30.

Senator Wallace Bennett denounces creeping socialism at a Bonfire with workers and candidates, accusing the administration of wanting to take over power. He contends the president seeks defeat of GOP leaders to push programs, and that Utah congressional power has united against him. He warns of Freeman Cochrantht altering the Constitution by letting the executive draft bills and delay Congress for 60 days.

Car Wreck North of Vernal Causes $700 in Damages

A 1057 Oldsmobile sustained about $700 damages when it ran off State Highway 44, 23 miles north of Vernal, at 12:15 am on a curve. Driver Date M. Mullinger, 21, of 144 No 1st West, suffered slight injuries. Investigation by Utah Highway Patrol cites pending completion. Officer Set. Howard D. Powell reports the incident.

Bobcat and Elk Prove Hunting Can Be Exciting

Baroney Goodman and family hunted near Vernal on a Saturday morning. They shot a bobcat at Big Park about 45 miles northwest of Vernal, then spied a herd of 10 elk in Kane Nollan. A charging bull elk charged them but they escaped into trees, ending a thrilling morning.
