Remodeling of Local Jail Sparks Safety Debate
Uintah county sheriff Herbert Snyder argues current jail heating endangers prisoners and proposes a central heating system as a major upgrade. The aging building bears scars from escapes, with windows replaced repeatedly and coal stoves still used for heat. A recent incident involved a pipe loosening near detentions, tied to a street incident. A notable jail break by Otis Woodring, from Snyder, Oklahoma, used a stove grate to breach a wall on a past date, leading to a chase into Texas.

Expect to Find New Source Of Water Supply
The Monsanté Chemical Company plans drilling a water well to tap an underground reservoir beneath Brush Creek Mountain. A new water source may be discovered as hydrologists note springs from canyons near Ashley Creek and Yampa River appear connected to underground formations. Max Legette’s 1880 study and subsequent discussions with Echo Park Dam Committee support the theory of hidden reservoirs in the Uinta region, potentially enriching regional water supply.
