Church Head Urges Latter-day Saints to Live Gospel or Step Aside

President Heber J. Grant closed the 108th LDS Church conference in Salt Lake City with a call for all general officers to live the gospel and the Word of Wisdom. He warned leaders to step aside if not living the commandments, stressing revival begins at home and urging tithes and fasting as part of Church stewardship.

Gan Club and Sportsmen Acquire Trap Equipment

Local groups Gan Club and Sportsmen raise funds to buy a Remington Leggett target trap to install at Green Acres golf course this weekend. The trap will support weekly year round shoots. W A Banks and contributors aided the fundraising. Plans include the Pheasant Hunter's Ball at Imperial Hall on November 6 and a charter approval by the American Rifle Association.

Chief A A Anderson to Speak at Scout Outing Friday

Chief A A Anderson of the Uish National Parks Council, Boy Scouts of America, will speak at the Scouters outing at Calders Park Friday evening. Activities begin at 4 30 p m with a softball game and barbecue. A campfire program will conclude with Anderson speaking. all scouters and headmasters are expected to attend.

Wife of Vernal Auto Mechanic Buried Tuesday

Grace Ananda Pehneck, 47, died Sunday of kidney cancer at a Vernal hospital. Funeral services were held Tuesday at 1 p.m. in the Vernal Second ward chapel. Interment followed at Vernal Memorial Park. Survived by husband Henry Pehacek and daughter Lois Jana, with two sisters, Lilly Deweese and Bessie Hughes.

Church Supervisor Praises Vernal Seminary Progress

Dr. M. Lynn Bennion supervisor of the LDS Seminary work visited Vernal last week. He praised the enrollment of 330 seniors and 100 juniors, and commended the cemetery building project saying it would handle the large student body.

Five Million Planned for Phosphate Plant Survey

A federal plan to spend five million dollars funds a processing plant trial for rock phosphate in the Intermountain region. Led by Dr. Harry Curtis the survey covers Utah Idaho Wyoming and Montana with visits to Montpelier Evanston and Vernal as planning proceeds for an experimental plant near the heaviest deposit. Dr. Elmer G Peterson cites conference aims to hear Curtis report with Utah Wyoming and Idaho governors expected to attend.

Vernal Woman Honored At Legion Meeting

Mrs Eva Ashton national committeewoman named national vice chairman of the constitution and by laws committee at the National American Legion and Legion Auxiliary Convention held September 20 to 23 in New York. Utah earned the McRae trophy for largest department membership, claimed permanently for Utah after three consecutive wins. Ashton, Ora Lewis of Logan, and Guy Warner remained in New York after the event visiting May Johnson, Mrs Oakley, Radio City and Niagara Falls. They returned to Salt Lake City via a special train, greeted by Rat and Leslie Ashton.

Jensen Ferry Monument to Be Dedicated

Jensen awaits Columbus Day October 12 as the Jensen ferry monument is dedicated at 2:00 p m. A Uintah high school band under Carl Engar performs a historical pageant and Esacalante Camp history is shared. Mrs. Louisa B Hacking leads the United Daughters of Utah Pioneers program with remarks by Mrs Oral Tenney. The marker is presented by a Central D the Utah P. Camp member from Salt Lake City and accepted by Mrs Florence Ky amp president. Unveiling is by Mrs Rose R Walker Uintah Camps president and Mrs Kelly. Deer Hunting Outlook Near Vernal Promises Best in Years

Deputy Game War den Floyd Noel says the Vernal area deer hunt should be the best in years with good feed and deer in fine condition. The season runs Oct 20 to 30, with rules banning highway hunting within 60 feet and outlawing auto or headlight aided shots. Hunters are urged to note boundaries along Big Brush Creek to Diamond Gulch and to attach official tags to deer heads. Waterfowl will open Nov 1 to 30 at Stewarts Lake and Leota Lakes, with geese along Green River already seen. Pheasant season pending, likely similar to last year.

Colorado Lets Contract for Finishing 40

Colorado's highway department let bids last week to finish the final link of U S 40 between Denver and Idaho Springs. The plan covers 1.05 miles of westward progression from Weat Colfax Avenue, narrowing to 40 feet, then a four and a quarter mile southwest route to the Mount Vernon canyon highway. An underpass under the interurban Denver-Golden line is expected to cost about $50,000 and will be let soon.

Mother of Bessie Markey Dies in Salt Lake City

Hannah Lake Carpenter 76 of Salt Lake City died at home Friday from age related causes. Widow of Samuel F. Carpenter, former Utah State Prison guard she came to the United States 83 years ago from England. Surviving four sons William J. Carpenter Evanston Charles F. Carpenter Vernal Fred B. U S Marshal Takes Auto Thieves to Salt Lake

Mass Meeting to Nominate City Ticket Monday

A mass meeting of Vernal citizens is set for Monday evening October 11 at 7 39 pm at the courthouse to nominate a city ticket for November 2. Officers to be nominated include Mayor, city recorder, city treasurer, and two city councilmen for two years plus one for a four year term. The meeting urges broad citizen participation to voice approval or disapproval of the city election plan amid ongoing legal questions.

Infant Son of Victor Bascom Buried Here Sunday Afternoon
