Candidates have until Saturday to file for the school board vacancy with no filings yet reported by the county clerk. Incumbent Don Batty represents District No 3 covering Macr and Glines Wards. Elections are set for November 8 with filings possible by candidates or by five supporters on their behalf.
Uintah School District will increase lamb usage in host lunches within two weeks. Daily meat usage reaches about 400 pounds in the lunch program. A lamb stew lunch and roundtable on lamb utilization were held with Rodney A. Ashby and Utah Woolgrowers Association officers at Hotel Utah.
The Vernal Livestock Auction Co opened with about 300 in attendance and gross sales of 17000. Butrett E Coon credited local farmers and laborers for building the new barn. About 400 lambs 144 cattle and 35 hogs sold with lambs 14.40 to 27.20 per 160, feeder steers up to 17.50 and slaughter heifers up to 17.60. A weiner pig fundraiser attracted multiple bids for Jensen ward chapel. Attendees and donors included Uintah Packing Co Commercial Hotel Zane Christensen and others, Pete Wall final buyer.
A highway crash 23 miles west of Vernal injured two men and killed numerous sheep. Ferron Wilkins 27 swerved to avoid a left turning car driven by Homer Haynes 85, sending the truck and trailer into a ditch and overturning. Haynes suffered minor injuries and pneumonia later, while Wilkins and the sheep owner Louis D. Roberts faced losses. The truck carried about 250 sheep en route to wintering grounds Pleasant Valley Duchesna. The incident blocked Highway 40 for 45 minutes.
J H Bodily acquires Vernal Office Supply at 48 N Vernal Ave from L Siddoway and Mrs Siddoway due to their son’s illness. New owner plans expansion adding typewriters ledgers hooks and stationers with Mrs Bodily as manager aided by a clerk.
Fire prevention week highlighted by Vernal City Fire Department with statistics showing 1953 and 1954 fire counts and damages. Causes ranged from trash fires to faulty flues. the department stresses attic cleanup and grass control. Volunteer force of about 11 to 14 men per incident, led by Gene Weist, includes Mel Burke and Leo Cutshaw.
Ranger Uranium Exploration and Development reveals new drilling in Miller Creek area Moffat County Colorado with office in Hotel Vernal. Former Vernal Drilling Company operates on Colorado Plateau. Dougherty reports Shinarump Utah properties show potential while ore seams tested run 30 to 2008 inches and will be shipped. Properties near Uranium Peak and Rim Rock discovery leased near Trace Elements mill site at Maybell Colorado show large deposits of low grade ore.
A South trip by Mr and Mrs Lynn Guck and family was marred when a large truck struck their car in Georgetown Kentucky. No one was hurt and the vacationers were traveling homeward after leaving Vernal on Sept 23. Accompanying them were daughter Judy and Mrs Jim Fisher.
The store displays an air raid precautions card explaining what to do in an air raid. It lists alert signals, radio tuning for instructions, and life saving advice in simple language. Also on display is a Civil Defense booklet titled You Should Know About Biological Warfare.
Vernal merchants advertise Friday bargain day with livestock auction tailing the event. Local and out of town ranchers join at the new suction yard near Vernal on Highway 40 to offer cattle and livestock with merchants featuring special prices. The promotion urges residents and visitors to support local merchants and the livestock market during the event.
Funeral services for Lorin L Atwood 51 longtime Vernal resident were held Wednesday at 2 p m in Vernal First Ward chapel. He died Saturday night at 6 30 p m of a heart ailment. Born in Vernal November 26 1903 he was a son of Leopard and Rachel Hunting Atwood and a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter day Saints. Survivors include his widow Elsie Long Atwood a daughter Evelyn Sheffer Vernal three brothers Evan Atwood Vernal Lawrence Atwood Clearfield and Nephi Atwood Oxden and a sister Wanda Hardinger Salt Lake City. Burial was in Vernal Memorial Park.
A temporary opening for a juvenile probation officer in the Third District Court Basin area was announced by Miss Belle Angus, director of Uintah County Public Welfare. The nine month vacancy follows Glen Freeman returning to school. Starting salary is $270.00.
Maurles Harding of Provo a former mayor and city official was named by Gov Bracken Lee to fill the vacancy on the Fourth Judicial Court after Judge William Stanley Dunford's death The appointment runs until the 1958 general election with the remaining term on the non partisan ballot Harding a Provo City commissioner mayor and former city judge is a BYU graduate and World War I artillery veteran He was admitted to the Utah State Bar March 31 1924 and will serve as one of six examiners and one of seven Utah State Bar commissioners
Work on the natural gas pipeline installation near North Vernat Avenue progresses in phases. Right of way and ditching wrap up this week, pipe stringing due Thursday, pipelaying and welding due Sunday, with finishing and cleanup by October 15. Equipment moves to Engineers Limited Pipeline Co for Rangely to Salt Lake line work. some heavy gear remains for winter use on laterals and loops.
Veral post office will close at noon on Saturdays until further notice, announced postmaster Frank G. Slaugh earlier this week.
Vernal hosts an Air Defense Ground Observer Post supervised by Karl Bancroft with Alc Gene Rochelle arranging staff of 50 volunteers to observe and report aircraft to Salt Lake City. Volunteers over 17 can join. training leads to Ground Observer Corps wings. Fall meeting planned to finalize volunteers.
L Siddoway secretary manager of Vernal Chamber of Commerce promotes the Upper Colorado River Storage Fund in southern Utah counties. He plans visits to commissioners and groups to explain fund use, finance by county levies, and to counter distortions by California lobbyists and conservation groups.
