City Council Holds Short Session Last Wednesday

City council met in a brief session with Mayor Colton and councilmen present. They discussed laying a water meter at the city head and a canal company agreement. Licenses were debated as businesses aren t paying enough, with a revised rate due Jan 1. New applications from The City Bakery and John B Mansey were received and a laundry license inquiry was heard. The meeting adjourned after bills were approved.

Relief Society Red Cross Sale Brings In Over Six Hundred Dollars

At the county fair the Stake Heller societies raised over $600 for the Red Cross with a $50 prize from Uintah State Bank awarded to the group earning the most. Mrs John N Davis led the sale. contributing wards include Vernal First and Second Maeser Ashley Naples Glines and more. Several quilts remain to be sold and a quilt won by Aunt Jane McCarroll was returned to First ward for resale. Water main extensions will begin, stretching from Andrew King to Lake Richardson and other planned routes through Bennion and Hatch areas.

Golden Wedding Celebrated in a Fitting Manner

The Golden wedding anniversary of Mr and Mrs Joseph Hardy was celebrated at Woodmen Mall on October 3 with a decorated hall and a program including readings, solos, and a piano piece. About 160 guests enjoyed supper and dancing, and each guest received a piece of cake. This marks the third golden anniversary in the family, following Nathan C. Davis and Allan Davia.

Fourth Liberty Loan Drives Uintah County to Buy Bonds

The Uintah County Liberty Loan drive opened last Saturday under County Chairman LW Curry. Mrs John N Davis reports strong house to house canvassing and enthusiastic reception from women leaders. Local banks offer installment purchases with ten dollars monthly for a ten dollar bond and five dollars monthly for a sixty dollar bond. The campaign uses the slogan A Bond in Every Home and seeks 100 percent participation from firms and organizations in the stake.

Ben A Critchlow the manager of the Vernal Golden Rule store said the business will close as he must report for draft service. The stock will be sold and the building vacated as Critchlow moves to Ogden to handle affairs until called to service. He has been in Vernal about a year and plans Vernal as his home in the future.

Washington announces strict rules for Christmas packages to sailors on overseas naval vessels. Vernal Brings Plans for a City Brass Band

Efforts to organize a Vernal brass band gain backing from the Commercial club which will aid in forming the group. Pat Markey leads preliminary steps and aims to recruit members for a roster. Sufficient material exists to create a band that could rival other state organizations with a fall and winter concert series.

A Uintah County Red Cross worker clarifies reports that soldiers must pay for Red Cross garments. An affidavit shows no one pays for items received, and the story was caused by a missing word in a letter. The Red Cross states anyone may request a personal explanation about article disposition.
