Fred C. Walker, chief of the earth dam section in Denver, is in Vernal to inspect a cavern discovered at Steinaker Dam. The cave is about eight feet wide and 3.2 feet deep with no seepage noted. Bureau officials surveyed settlements and stated the structure is not threatened and there is no likelihood of immediate failure.
A 12 year old runaway from Rifle Colorado was picked up at the Central Hotel by City Officer Jack Boren. He carried $26 from an Assembly of God home where his foster parents were employed. Foster parents were contacted and took him home.
Phulps Petroleum Co reports a Flat Rock Uintah County oil test now seen as more significant. Initial 740 feet of free oil was surpassed by 1,120 feet recovered during a drill stem test. Crude is around 50 degree gravity with high pour point, in Green River transitional zone. Location Philippe Flat Rack No 2 wildcat Sec 20 T14S R20E, depth below 4631 feet.

Laur ence Bird Caldwell eight of Maeser had funeral services Monday at 11 am in Vernal Mortuary after he was found dead from a gunshot wound Friday noon at his home. Investigating deputies and county attorney labeled wound personal safety related. He was born May 23 1912 in Vernal, son of Francis M and Effie Bird Caldwell. Surviving brothers include Blake Eldon Forest Arus of Vernal and Francis of Flagstaff, three sisters Mrs Charles Burton Lapoint and Mrs Isa bell Galley and Mrs Lela McCarrel of Vernal. Caldwell was a farmer rancher and World War II veteran.
Santa Claus arrives at Vernal airport around 11 a.m. Saturday and a firetruck ride to the courthouse will give candy to children. Downtown displays include a large Christmas tree at the main intersection. The Vernal Jaycees oversee activities with free holiday shows on Saturdays December 8 and 15 at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., and a home lighting contest.
Uintah High School starts its basketball season with a Friday home opener against Gunnison. Gunnison beat Uintah at last year’s state tournament and star Gary Hill is expected to shine. New coach Dick Stoney begins his first season and Bill Caldwell leads the junior varsity. Schedule lists games through late February with the state tournament in Salt Lake City in March.
Four Judicial District heard five criminal cases Tuesday. Robert LeRoy Hil, 25, pleaded guilty to second degree burglary. a grand theft charge was dismissed and sentencing continued. Raymond Martin Jr. sentenced to one to 20 years for burglary, suspended with six months in county jail. G D Clouter placed on probation one year and must restitution for bad checks. Charles Serawen changed to guilty on assault with dangerous weapon. sentencing continued and referred to Adult Probation. Shirt Pierce Stubbs pled guilty to grand larceny, referred to Adult Probation.
Ouray National Wildlife Refuge announces Keith Wansen as Assistant Refuge Manager, effective November 26. A native of Amelga Utah he studied at College of Southern Utah Cedar City and Utah State University graduating in Wildlife Management. His career includes posts at Salt Plains Hagerman Denison and Havasu Lake refuges. He and wife Caroll with four children will reside on the refuge near Ouray.
Utah State Road Commission discussed Cart Creek Bridge opening in Salt Lake City. Commissioner Francia Feltch of Vernal was authorized to arrange ribbon cutting ceremonies for about December 12 to 14. The bridge sits on the access road to Flaming Gorge Dam.
Vernal Rotary Club designates December as Safety Seat Belt Month with proclamations by Uintah County Commission chairman Harold McKee and Mayor Alvin Kay. Officials voice alarm at rising highway fatalities and note seat belts could prevent deaths or serious injuries in area accidents as banks plan to distribute brochures on the campaign.
The FATA will hold the next council meeting in the multipurpose room at Ashley Elementary School at 7:30 p.m. All eligible attendees are asked to be present.
Uintah Stake conference sessions emphasized the growth of missionary work in the LDS Church with D Arthur Maycock of Salt Lake City as visiting speaker. Frank Walker presided as stake president. musical selections featured Vernal wards and local choirs. Also noted was a 23 year old Upland California man Harald Edwin Preece arrested in Vernal on a stolen car routing check and to be handed to U S Marshal after Dyer Act violation.
Deseret News lists grid stars with Wurg Werner Wannath Wigh as second-team All-State.Albregton selections include Roy Caldwell at end and Steve Aycock at guard.
