Day of Thanks in Old City of Leyden
A historical sketch links Thanksgiving in Leyden to 1574 siege relief led by William of Orange. Spanish forces retreated after a storm and a weakened wall, witnessed by a boy, paving the city’s miracle delivery and long gratitude thereafter. Leyden’s feast, later echoed by Dutch refugees in America, evolves from hodgepodge to roast turkey and pumpkin pie.
