Scientist to Speak At K and F Meeting

Dr. Gerald Wendt editor of Science Illustrated will speak at the Uintah Knife and Fork club in Hotel Vernal on December 1 at 7 p.m. He forecasts future science impacts from lab substitutes and innovative consumer tech. Wendt, editor of The Atomic Age Opens, has advised Time Life and Fortune and promises a tour of new developments from nylon shoes to electronic lighting.

Forest Clerk Moves to Nevada from Ashley Forest

George G. Organ, cler k on the Ashley national forest for a year, transfers from Vernal to Elko Nevada to work on the Humboldt national forest with similar duties. Unmarried and a former Vernal Junior Chamber of Commerce member, Organ came from Chalice Idaho and is a native of Colorado. The move reflects a regional clerical staffing shift. A farewell dinner was held in his honor at Hotel Vernal before he left Monday for Nevada. No replacement named yet for the Ashley staff.

Uintah Snow Sports formed to develop winter recreation

Vernal business leader Claudius A Banks named president of Uintah Snow Sports a group formed with Lions Kiwanis and Junior Chamber backing to build a winter sports program for Vernal and Uintah county. Plans include a 600 foot ski tow five miles above Dry Fork a warming house kitchen trailer and temporary forest service permit with a permanent permit hoped for later Memberships at 2 50 fund the tow and gear with future goals a lodge skating rink and other facilities to follow the initial ski operation enabling sledding and tobogganing this year.

American Legion District Convention Slated Sunday

Delegates from 15 American Legion posts in Carbon Emery Grand San Juan Duchesne and Uintah counties will assemble at Roosevelt for their annual fall convention next Sunday. The event will hear a report from Peter W. Forrester Price on the recent convention and include a session on service officers and veterans rights under current laws led by Rev Horsley.

A weekend storm covered the Uintah Basin with heavy snowfall and subfreezing temperatures. Drivers faced icy streets but no serious traffic accidents were reported as authorities monitored the conditions and warned of continued winter weather.

Jaycees Push Plans for Vernal Yule Jubilee

Kenneth Sawards of the Junior Chamber of Commerce announced this week that Vernal will proclaim a Yule Jubilee on December 4 at 2 pm in downtown. The Jaycees met November 21 for a kickoff breakfast and began decorating with 1500 to 2000 candy bags and garland rope. Santa plans to attend, with a children’s party and a final dance at Imperial Hall. Lighting contests will run for homes and for churches and schools, with prizes for top entries.

Uintah High Names Members of Two Committees

Uintah High selects two committees for the class of 49 with Mark Allen as senior class president heading the graduation panel. The dismissal committee is led by Phillis Luck and Stanley Anderson and includes Clyde Aikens Dick Hullinger and Dean Gardiner. Class advisors are Electa Caldwell Bernell Hales Charles Freeman and Frank Wright. Mrs Mack McCreary of Santa Rose Calif visits relatives here and plans to return after Thanksgiving.

Uintah County Hospital Construction Receives First Government Payment

Uintah county officials report the first 74 582 16 in state and federal funds have been released as 25 percent of the new Uintah county general hospital construction nears completion. Built by The Lowe Construction Co the 28 000 square foot ultramodern two story facility will cost about 400 000 with two thirds funded by state and federal aid and one third by local taxpayers. Final completion is scheduled for August 1 of next year with ownership to pass to the county after all contracts are fulfilled and inspections approved.

Farmers Complete AAA Elections in Uintah County

Uintah County elected six district community committeemen to administer the AAA farm program for the coming year. The district leaders will serve as delegates to the county convention, where further officers were chosen. J. Vern Hopkins and Victor Brown attended, praising the program’s Uintah County operation. A Sixth grade pet and hobby show was sponsored at Maeser School by Mrs. Delbert Horrocks.
