Oil Base Recovery Boosts Commercial Shale Output Prospects

A Bureau of Mines report outlines a new pro cord that could cut recovery costs by one to two cents per gallon and render shale products price competitive with petroleum. Colorado shale tests yielded over 1 gallon per ton, implying 300 million barrels from 600 square miles, with 37 million barrels produced nationwide since 1859. Utah Colorado Wyoming hosts the major shale reserves with smaller pockets in Nevada and Indiana. The process uses shale fed to a reactor top, hot gas moving upward for recovery, and a 300 ton daily pilot plant slated for demonstration.
