Uintah County Po ses for Evacuees With Atomic Attack Threat

Uintah County civil defense director Dean Trowland warned that an atomic attack on the United States is a real threat and Uintah County plans to receive evacuees from Salt Lake City and potentially California. The county has secured a hospital case-power unit field hospital kitchens and walkie talkies for state police frequencies. Royal Trenderson, county Red Cross chair, said 150 people took first aid courses last year and a new program will teach entire families self care for emergencies.

Watkins Offered Interior Post Leads to Cabinet Talk

A report says Senator Arthur V Watkins of Utah, a Republican in the November 4 election, was offered the Interior post to become effective soon. Len Watkins, senior Interior official, may succeed Fred A. Seaton as interior secretary, with Seaton moving to the White House. Watkins reportedly had not decided whether to accept, and declined comment from his Washington office.

Hal Richardson Takes Over Ashton Service Station

Hal Richardson, longtime operator of Hal's Texaco Service Station at 199 West Main opposite Safeway, has taken over Ashton Service Station west of the Post Office. The transfer became effective Wednesday. Richardson, entering his twentieth year in the business, will handle Union Oil products under the Ashton Service name. Ashton Service was previously run by Cal Gibbs and Jack Allred, who have relocated to Vernal to run Fleet Tire Service. The Texaco station’s new operator has yet to be named.

United High School opened tryouts for the basketball season drawing 32 hopefuls. Murder Trial Opens for Ute Man in Vernal

The first degree murder trial of Kneale Saknikent, 38, Whiterocks, began its second day before Fourth District Court Judge Joseph E Nelson. Saknikent is charged with killing Cigar Greenstick Ungarasken, 82, also of White rocks, whose badly beaten body was found May 14. Witnesses described the investigation, the defendant's movements, and autopsy findings attributing death to multiple head injuries from a firm yet yielding weapon.

Utah Water Board Approves Ouray Work Funds

The Utah Water and Power Board at the State Capitol approved final payments for five projects, including $74,000 for an irrigation project on the Whiterocks River in the Uinta Mountains. The Ouray Park Irrigation Co. will use the funds to build two reservoirs on tributaries with a total project cost of $100,000.
