Lapoint Rancher Dies After Collapse at Pet erson Ranch

Funeral services were held for William Walley a Lapoint resident found dead near a haystack on the Peterson ranch five miles north of Gusher. Authorities ruled asphyxia from a heart attack the immediate cause. Walley had lived in Uintah County after coming from Texas. Interment was in Vernal cemetery.

Red Cross Committees Named for Uintah County Campaign

The annual Red Cross drive in Uintah County will begin next week under directing chairman Miss Fay Siddoway. Committees have been appointed across county communities including Vernal, Naples, Ashley, Duchesne, and Whiterocks, with many local residents listed as members.

Armistice Day Program At Uintah High Auditorium

Witbeck Post No 1 of the American Legion observed Armistice Day at Uintah high school auditorium on Thursday afternoon. The Legion auxiliary, faculty, and central schools cooperated in a program that opened with the advance of the colors, community singing, a two minute silent prayer, and vocal selections including The Flag Without a Stain. Mrs John Jorgensen sang with Mrs Ellis Merkley delivering the address.

Local Seed Plant Delivers Half Million Pounds Alfalfa Seed

Peppard Seed company reports about 50600 pounds of alfalfa seed still undelivered in Ashley valley. Prices announced on November 1 include No 1 at 15.50 per cwt and No 2 at 14.00 per cwt with extra 1st class seed at a premium. Clover seed remains scarce with a price of 9.90 per cwt offered.

Indian Service Employee Dies in Verna After Long Illness

Charles Owen Cummings a longtime Uintah Basin resident and Indian Service employee died last Monday at Vernal hospital from gallstone complications after a lengthy illness. Funeral services were held at Whiterocks Episcopal church with interment in Randlett cemetery. He is survived by his wife and three children aged three five and seven. A native of Iowa he was born 55 years ago.

Power Company and County Repair Road to Plant Near Ashley Creek

Utah Power and Light in cooperation with the county commissioners repaired a three mile road stretch from Sand Ridge to the power plant north of Vernal. Work included widening the dugway where Spring Creek undermined the road, smoothing rock strewn sections, and leveling sunken spots. Livestock Truck Line Proves Uintah Basin Feasible

The Utah Public Utilities commission granted Sterling Transportation a certificate of necessity and convenience and a Salt Lake City to Vernal freight franchise. Livestock shipments, mainly sheep and hogs, began earlier this year by truck with no losses, proving the method economical and timely compared to hoof transport.

Uintah County observes National Educational Week with broad programs

The Uintah County schools marked National Educational Week with daily programs at Vernal High School. Miss Mary Redmond of Wilson wins Uintah County Grand Championship at the state fair in Salt Lake City for top points among club members. The senior class exhibit in sewing earned the ribbon. last year she won the Junior class championship earning a trip to Chicago with state club members. She attends Duchene County High School and is praised for her industry.

Alfalfa Seed Exhibit Prepared for Chicago Show

E E Smith of Bountiful and Dr George Stewart lead Utah preparation for the international hay and grain show in Chicago. Utah earned thirteen of fifteen prizes for alfalfa seed last year with corn and grain awards as well. The exhibit will showcase alfalfa and clover seed with support from Utah State Farm Bureau, the state agricultural college, the department of agriculture, Salt Lake chamber of commerce, feedmen associations, and seed dealers.

Funeral services for Grandma Ross, also known as Genera Elien Mahone Rees, were held in the ward chapel on Thursday of last week. Two Uintah Girls File Parole Petitions in Utah

Forty one inmates at Utah State Prison petition clemency for the November pardon session. Among those seeking parole are Esporas Van and Nellie Trujillo, two girls aged 16 and 17, convicted with Hardy Murray and Ernest Trujillo for murder in the second degree at age 18. The group faced a life sentence for first degree murder. trial defense was by Thomas W. Donnell of Vernal. The killing occurred in October 1923 at Rhoades Ranch near Whiterocks.

Thanksgiving turkey prices seen higher this year

An eastern expert predicts Thanksgiving turkey costs to rise to about 45 to 48 cents per pound. The turkey crop is down from last year with Texas the big early state for turkeys, while Oklahoma Arkansas Missouri Kansas Iowa and Ohio expect smaller flocks. Frozen turkey reserves are down, and overall holdings of chickens and fowls are up providing some offset to the turkey shortage.
