Salt Lake City chamber members toured Uintah Basin sites and heard Eugene MacKinnon warn of oil shortages in wartime while stressing goodwill with Spain and Arab states. Uintah Basin leaders praised local oil gains and projects from gravel roads to Vernal air service and a future four lane highway to Salt Lake City.
Texas Oil Co plans a bulk plant and warehouse on Highway 40 west of Vernal adjoining the Utah Oil Co property. The site, purchased from Archie Johnson, will feature fuel storage tanks and a warehouse. No construction contract has been let yet.
Vernal Main Street cafe owners Mr and Mrs Owen Bodily announced closure on Wednesday thanking locals for support. Kitchen gear sold to Cornelius Asmus who will run a cafe in the depot building, while Bodilys plan a clothing store in the former cafe space. The Grill Cafe on Main Street also shut this week.
Bruce R. McConkie and J Leonard Love headlined the Uintah stake quarterly conference with 1303 attendees at the 10 am Sunday session and 1150 at the 2 pm session. McConkie spoke on the Book of Mormon and Joseph Smith, while Love outlined welfare plans. A new ward, Whiterocks, was formed from Tridell Bennett and Farm Creek with Preston Atwood as bishop.
Max W. Cluff of the U S Forest Service was elected president of the Vernal Kiwanis Club at a Hotel Vernal meeting. Claudius A. Banks was chosen vice president and eight directors named to the board. Incoming officers begin duties at the start of the new year, succeeding M H Wilson.
Vernal building inspector Seth Perry resigns and LeRoy Taylor announces Royce Cap Mowrey will fill the vacancy. Perry and family plan winter in Arizona and Mexico. Mowrey noted as longtime Vernal contractor brings needed expertise to enforce the building code. Health official Jerome Trichter links rat problems to sanitation and urges action.
The World famous Orchestra Nationale of France failed to arrive on time for performances at Brigham Young University after a 97 piece bus broke down en route from Denver. Vernal officials aided transport via a high school bus and instruments to Provo, delaying matinee shows but critics hailed the effort as a great Utah musical treat led by Charles Munch.
Uintah county district reports over 1 000 000 in public and private construction funds for Vernal projects including a new 35 bed county hospital. Plews Construction Co. leads on schedule with Hyrum Plews supervising. State federal funds provide 134 600 locally raised to cover construction costs. Checks totaling 74 501 were received for initial expenses under the hospital act.
Utah Education Association officials commend Uintah County Teachers Association for hospitality and plans. A 200-strong delegation attended the leadership school in Vernal October 28 to 30 with two out of state speakers and a banquet at Imperial Hall.
Max C. Winward a LDS missionary writes Oct 2 from American Samoa praising the Vernal Express for its coverage of home news. He thanks the paper for recording happiness and tragedies and hopes the paper continues its good work for its 2200 readers.
A large cannon like blast at about 11 p m Saturday shook windows and rattled dishes across Uintah County with reports reaching Lapoint. Police fire and sheriff officers have no definite explanation. L C Thorne, a longtime resident, suggested a meteor as a possible cause citing a historic similar event.
J P Dougan president Equity Oil Co told Uintah Valley officials and Salt Lake Chamber members in Vernal that Utah will become an oil state. A gas blowoff occurred at Crain Griffith Oil Co near Ashley Valley No 1 well, 6 miles east of Vernal, when drilling encountered a gas pocket at 725 feet. Water burst to full height then froze after derrick was encased and control was regained later that day. Geologists noted the dome may be larger than expected. The Carter Of Co struck the pocket at a lower depth. The crowd of about 200 heard Mr Doggan speak as praise letters arrive from M Rex Jensen and H Grant West. Vernal educators call the conference the greatest gathering there.
Obituaries report the death of veterinarian George Henry Wilson at his Vernal home and a service for Ray G. Latrum, longtime Uintah Basin businessman and former county commissioner. Wilson, born 1865 in Provo, died at 3:15 am aging, with funeral at Maeser ward. Latrum, born 1882 in Cottonwood, died Friday of a heart ailment. services held at Roosevelt stake chapel.
Vernal residents discussed an enormous elk head mounted on a pickup in front of Vernal Rug Co. James Hoopes of Whiterocks shot the 600 pound animal in the Uintah forest on October 29 with a .32 caliber rifle. Antlers measured 58 inches from base to tip with a similar spread. the animal was a seven pointer.
Francis Feltch was elected President of the Highway 40 Assn at a Monday night meeting. Directors re elected include Henderson Eskelson Siddeway Stringham and Hopkins. Hopkins was also re elected secretary. Vernal members will attend a Utah Colorado Highway 40 Assn meeting in Craig Thursday night.
The Uintah county 4 H club held its Achievement Day at the Vernal Second LDS ward chapel. About 260 people attended as 62 leadership awards 392 achievement awards 11 pins for four plus years 2 silver clover awards for five years and one pearl clover for 15 years were presented. Pearl clover went to Mrs Sadie McConkie of Vernal. Silver clover to Mrs Viva Goodrich of Tridel and Mrs Norma McLean of Naples. The event was led by William C Whitaker county agricultural agent.
