Vernal Businesses To Close Monday For Veterans Day

Vernal area merchants and businessmen will close their stores Monday for Veterans Day. The Chamber of Commerce announced the observance early this week. Some drug stores and service stations will stay open at least part of the day, while the three day pheasant hunt coincides with the holiday.

Uintah Community Concerts Assn schedules dinner drive

A dinner at Hotel Vernal Monday evening will kickoff the Uintah Community Concerts Assn membership drive to bring top nationally known groups to the Uintah Basin. About 50 attended last week’s meeting where the drive was organized. Whitney Mammond will chair the dinner and John Schickling of Columbia Artists Management will outline the community music plan. A one week post-dinner drive aims for 800 memberships. tickets will be sold at the door for sponsored concerts, with limited student tickets and reciprocal acceptance with nearby cities. The local committee includes Aaron Hansen president and Glade Bowards first VP, among others.

Progressive Party Sweeps Vernal and Votes No to Fluoridation

The newly formed Progressive Party won a decisive victory in Vernal with Lester R. Miracle elected mayor and Stew Art Ashton and Alvin Kay seated to four year terms. Voters rejected fluoridation 672 to 449, signaling a shift toward change while snow and sleet kept turnout high at 4,170 votes across North and South Vernal precincts.

Pheasant Hunt Weather Affects Success In Vernal Area

A one week end pheasant hunt in Vernal depends largely on weather, wardens say, with birds possibly hard to flush under poor conditions while dogs struggle. Farmers Seek Protection From Pheasant Writers at Ulntah County Meeting

Ulntah County farmers led by Hyrum Slaugh Lynn Richens and Clarence Palmer asked the county commission for farm protection from pheasant hunters. They alleged signs were torn down and fences damaged. The commission planned to urge the sheriff to act and the sheriff’s department agreed to cooperate fully with farmers.

Adult Education Planning Meeting Scheduled Friday

Arthur C. Wiscombe Uintah School District announces the start of commercial adult education courses. A general meeting is set for Friday November Bth at Uintah High School at 7:00 pm. Type shorthand and other commercial courses will be planned and registered then. Additional courses are planned but unlikely to begin until the second week of January.

Publishers Take Air Tour Over Four Corners Oil Field

Utah weekly newspaper publishers and Intermountain editors flew a bird’s eye view over the Four Corners oil region near Uintah County. The trip showcased Carter Oil Company activities as reporters and executives toured the green river south and east areas while hunters faced snow and mud reducing game.

Lightning fire damages Colton haystack on ranch attack

Vernal fire crews responded Monday at 1 50 p m to a lightning strike that set a large Colton ranch haystack ablaze. Firefighters battled the flames for hours but could not save the stack, with heavy damage reported to about 4 000 bales.
