Western Slope Derby Race Meet at Vernal Septembers

The Western Slope Derby Race Meet will be held in Vernal in September as a two day event run by the Vernal Roden Association. Members from Vernal Craig Hayden Steamboat Springs Kremmling Rifle Baggs and Hancely support the meet which will feature 1 2 mile derbies and a final. Winners must place first or second twice and owners must reside in the county hosting the race. Proceeds will go to United County Hospital after expenses.

Oil test planned south of Rangely near Dragon Head

Area south of Rangely to be tested for oil with a well funded by Nic Geners Petroleum Company within a week. Location about two miles south of Rangely on Dragon Head in Elo Blanco County. Green Lakes Dude Ranch Opens Friday

The Green Lakes Dude Ranch in Ashley National Forest, 42 miles north of Vernal on the Vertical Material Highway, will open Friday. James Smith, manager, announced the opening. The ranch offers fishing, boating, swimming, horse riding, plus comfortable cabin accommodations and cooked meals. A dance is planned each Saturday evening at the ranch beginning June 7.

W W Clyde Co of Springville submitted a bid of 67035.40 for Steinaker Draw road surfacing, about 16383 above the $30542 estimate set by the commission. A second large fire hit Duchesne on Saturday morning May 37 destroying the O. P. Skages and Duchtive Neug Stores. The rear walls were tumbled, the Skages stock was a total loss, much of the drug store stock was ruined, and furniture and fixtures suffered heavy damage.

Judge Turner Dies Following Brieflress Turner's Rifted Career in Utah Court

Abe W. Turner, a Utah state supreme court justice and longtime Fourth Judicial District judge, died Sunday in Salt Lake City. Born April 28, 1893, in Seber, he practiced law in Provo after graduating from the University of Georgetown and the University of Utah, served as Provo city attorney, was appointed Fourth District judge in 1920, reelected in 1928, 1938, and 1940, and became state supreme court justice in 1944. He returned to private life in 1949 and remained active in community affairs, including serving as Whale County Democratic Chairman and as a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
