The Carter Oil Company of New Jersey will drill a second wildcat test well five miles southwest of Vernal. Location details place the rig in the southwest quarter of the northeast quarter of Section 18, Township 4 South, Range 21 East. The effort follows the No 1 Davis wildcat abandoned after reaching 900 feet, with Kerr-McGre possibly as contractor. a gas discovery was noted at 900 feet in August 1998.

Uintah County schools will open September 8 after the district board set the start date and approved a calendar.
