Elis Wins in Eight Round Legional Boxing Bout

The American Legion boxing card held Saturday night May 24 in Vernal delivered thrills as Ellis defeated Art Palmer of Salt Lake in eight rounds for the headliner. Other bouts featured John Massey defeating Floyd Walker by technical knockout and several draws and knockouts among local fighters.

Lions District Convention Attendees Ready for Plans

New Shell Station Opens in Ashton Next to Post Office

June 1 marks the formal opening of the Ashton Shell station on the corner west of the post office. Howard B Woolley continues in charge, overseeing three 1 inch pumps for regular Shell Ras and Shell Super fuel. A full Shell product line, Penzell, Goodyear tires, washing, greasing, and tire repair services are offered. The station features two washing pits, flood lights, a Neon sign, and red and orange Shell colors along the main highway.

Neola Man Clifford Mitchell Dies at Vernal Hospital

Clifford Mitchell of Neola died at Vernal Hospital after ten years of illness. Born November 1889 in Frances Utah he weighed 440 pounds at death and once, with seven brothers, weighed 2200 pounds total. Funeral services planned in Neola with details pending.

July Fourth celebration planned in Vernal by American Legion

The American Legion in Vernal plans a full day event with a daylight color salute, bugle calls, and band concert, a 11 o'clock patriotic program with Congressman Den B. C. Golton as orator, a ball game at the fairgrounds, pony races and other events, and a boxing card followed by a large dance at the Imperial.

Vernal Man Wins College Scholarship Award

Logan Grant Calder of Vernal Utah, a sophomore at Utah State Agricultural College, won Scholarship A for attaining the college honor roll each quarter. He also earned a first year debating award and is majoring in business administration in the School of Commerce. He belongs to the Sigma Chi fraternity.

State to Enforce Noxious Weed Law During Vernal Visit

Commissioner Harden Bennion of the Utah Department of Agriculture announced during a Vernal visit that the department will pursue weed eradication and control for the next months. The board designates noxious weeds and may charge landowners for eradication costs on the county tax rolls if orders are not followed, targeting species such as whitetop thistle cockle burr morning glory and burdock to protect land values and agricultural income.

Peppard Seed Company hires two experts for Uintah Basin beans

Manager C H Wilkinson of Peppard Seed Company announces added staff Amos Maxfield of Delta Utah and Al Dingle of Twin Falls Idaho to assist Uintah Basin bean growers. Ingle notes price of Great Northern Beans rose to 4.90 per cwt. The firm says U S imports of beans are annual and the basin crops target the national market.

Farm Bureau Clean Up Day Proves Highly Profitable

The Farm Bureau Clean-up Day held Saturday at the Farm Bureau headquarters drew visitors for a morning program and lawn improvements. Commissioner Arden Bennion and President J M McFerlane spoke as Uintah High Band played, followed by a luncheon and farm tour of Valley farms to study improvements in farming livestock water systems and home operations.

Kitchen Contest Achievement Day in Vernal Set

Arrangements made for a kitchen contest event in Vernal on Wednesday June. All interested persons will visit kitchens and lunch will be served at noon. A dance will be held at Imperial hall in the evening with three prizes for winners and a prize for the lucky number holder.
