Dr. C N Jensen delivers the graduation address at the Vernal high school amid a program honoring the class. Local celebrations include an Alumni banquet with officers elected, a mobile mail service arrival, church conventions attendance, marriage licenses, a lawn party, and plans for Maeser school building work.
The American Legion boxing card held Saturday night May 24 in Vernal delivered thrills as Ellis defeated Art Palmer of Salt Lake in eight rounds for the headliner. Other bouts featured John Massey defeating Floyd Walker by technical knockout and several draws and knockouts among local fighters.
Principal R L Pixton presents Uintah High School’s five year summary noting steady attendance and strong academic output. Enrollment totals 531 with 334 in upper grades, 147 in seventh and eighth. English department ranks high in state. Neldon Calder wins state short story prize. dramatics win silver trophy in Salt Lake City. Music, art, debating and domestic crafts shown strong progress with notable exhibits and performances.
The Conjoint Mutual of the two Vernal Wards will be held in the Vernal First Ward Chapel Sunday June 1. The program includes vocal contralto Aston Bingham violin solo Weldon Bastian piano solo Helen Culder cornet solo Charles Lewis short talks on lives of church leaders by Neldon Calder Coral Eaton Lowell Fox Lewis Roberts LaVern Olsen William B. Wallis Wilson Duke OK Koralls.
DOr W W Roses and family came home from Salt Lake City Friday of last week and plan to spend the summer there.
Miss Agnes Schaefermeyer a Vernal girl and graduate of Holy Cross Hospital Salt Lake City pays Vernal a two week visit before returning to Salt Lake City to resume nursing duties.
Mr and Mrs Ray Duse and a list of couples including Mr and Mrs W Fender, H B Calder, It Cooper, I C Anderson, Lloyd Winn, CBD NN Stringham, James H Wallis Jr, Douglas Thorn Hatch, L H Allan Thorn, and others traveled to American Fork for the Lions District Convention. Delegates planned to back the Planning Groups project and compete for the loving cup for best attendance.
June 1 marks the formal opening of the Ashton Shell station on the corner west of the post office. Howard B Woolley continues in charge, overseeing three 1 inch pumps for regular Shell Ras and Shell Super fuel. A full Shell product line, Penzell, Goodyear tires, washing, greasing, and tire repair services are offered. The station features two washing pits, flood lights, a Neon sign, and red and orange Shell colors along the main highway.
Clifford Mitchell of Neola died at Vernal Hospital after ten years of illness. Born November 1889 in Frances Utah he weighed 440 pounds at death and once, with seven brothers, weighed 2200 pounds total. Funeral services planned in Neola with details pending.
The American Legion in Vernal plans a full day event with a daylight color salute, bugle calls, and band concert, a 11 o'clock patriotic program with Congressman Den B. C. Golton as orator, a ball game at the fairgrounds, pony races and other events, and a boxing card followed by a large dance at the Imperial.
Logan Grant Calder of Vernal Utah, a sophomore at Utah State Agricultural College, won Scholarship A for attaining the college honor roll each quarter. He also earned a first year debating award and is majoring in business administration in the School of Commerce. He belongs to the Sigma Chi fraternity.
A reader advocates taking systematic town photographs to reveal how Vernal appears to outsiders. Start on main streets and quarter blocks, then photograph from center, highways, and public squares from all directions. Develop images, study them, and remove unattractive aspects to steadily improve the town’s appearance and prosperity.

Commissioner Harden Bennion of the Utah Department of Agriculture announced during a Vernal visit that the department will pursue weed eradication and control for the next months. The board designates noxious weeds and may charge landowners for eradication costs on the county tax rolls if orders are not followed, targeting species such as whitetop thistle cockle burr morning glory and burdock to protect land values and agricultural income.
Manager C H Wilkinson of Peppard Seed Company announces added staff Amos Maxfield of Delta Utah and Al Dingle of Twin Falls Idaho to assist Uintah Basin bean growers. Ingle notes price of Great Northern Beans rose to 4.90 per cwt. The firm says U S imports of beans are annual and the basin crops target the national market.
The Farm Bureau Clean-up Day held Saturday at the Farm Bureau headquarters drew visitors for a morning program and lawn improvements. Commissioner Arden Bennion and President J M McFerlane spoke as Uintah High Band played, followed by a luncheon and farm tour of Valley farms to study improvements in farming livestock water systems and home operations.

Arrangements made for a kitchen contest event in Vernal on Wednesday June. All interested persons will visit kitchens and lunch will be served at noon. A dance will be held at Imperial hall in the evening with three prizes for winners and a prize for the lucky number holder. Mrs Fenny Maycock and Mrs Fifie Barrows will score the kitchens Monday June 9. Prizes will be displayed next week at Leon Christensen’s office.
