John Nash reports the Vernals to Price road is in excellent shape for freighting compared with the usual rough condition. He notes freighters face high costs with oars at 276 dollars and hay at 80 cents per cwt, while some have cut rates to one dollar per cwt. The Gilsonite Company has refused gilsonite for hauling under these conditions.
Local lawyers moved quickly after learning the late legislature on March 1 enacted a law requiring every summons for publication to state the complainant charge. Several notices of summons will be republished to comply with the new rule.
Miss Jennie Johnson comes home from Springville where she taught school last winter. She will spend the summer with her family. Effie Johnson was very ill last Saturday but is now much improved and out of danger.
Victor Cram, a local star, will leave again around June 1 after a stretch of performances and engagements. He has many friends and supporters awaiting his return home.
A juror panel for the llaywood case has not been secured as proceedings continue. Prosecutors and defense counsel await voir dire findings and potential jury selection timing.

Ashley river bridge near Bishop Colton’s home is in bad shape for high water season. A ward social May 20 honors A V Watkins before his Salt Lake City mission departure June 9. A purse of twenty dollars and gifts from school children presented.
The department forms a new field division covering Luise Halay and Blackfoot Idaho and Utah. Charles F. Reid of Denver arrives to protect public lands from fraudulent entry, with Geo. E. Harrie acting chief in Salt Lake City and F. M. Guudain named chief of division eleven.
Twenty five condemned cavalry horses sold at auction in Duchesne last Saturday, drawing many buyers. Prices topped prior records with some animals fetching 135 dollars each. Most were old or lame, but capable of work once broken in.
Maeser Equitable Co-operative Association has secured wide subscriber support and will start business soon. Shares cost 100 dollars with a 10 percent initial payment. The aim is to create a pure cooperative store distributing shipped merchandise and later expand into other fields. Officers include Thomas Caldwell president, Philip Stringham vice president, A G Anderson treasurer, Byron Colton director.
Examinations for teachers will be held June 6 and 7 at the Vernal Central School Building. All teachers aiming to teach in Uintah County public schools are requested to take part. N G Sowarps, Co Supt.
